Awesome, Thanks for your reply Sal! THANK YOU for making the SE Resilience (3 of them no less), I've wanted one more than just about any model in any configuration. :) :Dsal wrote: ↑Mon May 31, 2021 9:06 pmJMM wrote: ↑Mon May 31, 2021 1:59 amSoooo.... back to the OP, I skimmed through the thread & didn't actually see an answer, does anyone know if the blades are getting their HT in the US, and/or getting ground in the US, or is all of it in China? Perhaps a Q for Sal post... I'm definitely interested in the answer and in how these compare to US/Golden S35VN...
Hi JMM,
As Warstein mentioned, they are heat treated in China. One of the makers purchased a modern heat treating oven and he's heat treating our knives for his own and other makers. He makes out Polestar, Alcyone, Raven, etc. One of the makers in China that we work with that loves knives and steel.

Flawless also concerning lockup and detent (no way to shake the knife open, and I am not too weak. Still easily flickable...)

I appreciate that Wartstein. The S35VN Resilience is already on the to buy list. If the S35VN is not chippy as suggested by VashHash, then the fully serrated version is also on the list. Would you say the liner lock approaches Military standards?Wartstein wrote: ↑Tue Jun 01, 2021 1:31 pmI have the S35VN Tenacious.skeeg11 wrote: ↑Mon May 31, 2021 7:34 pmSeems to be a lot of interest in the upcoming Resilience in S35VN. Such a good looking design. Actually this is what caught my eye when I joined here and before I ultimately bought a BHQ Para3 as my “return to Spyderco” knife. Would love to try a US made version of the design someday.
Re: s35vn from china
Hard to tell, since SILLY ME sold my Millie some time ago :o (miss it, have to get another soon!)
From what I recall:
- Concerning solid/firm/strong lockup: The Tenacious has at least Millie standards imho. Perhaps the lockup feels even stronger if one tries to wiggle blade / handle. Not the slightest blade play, and after all the Tenacious has - differently to the Millie - full liners and a shorter blade (= less leverage)
Lockbar hits the tang with its full surface, but "just", so perfect 50% (not too far to the right, not too far to the left)
- Concerning "smoothness" of operation: Perhaps my Millie was even a tad smoother and easier to open - though, as said, the Tenacious operates perfectly well, I can easily flick it with all fingers of my right hand (pinky just in a reverse grip of course).
What my Tenacious definitely has: A stronger detent than the Millie I had
- "Sound and feel": This is of no technical relevance (!), but the "sound and feel"of the Millie "double click" is even more satisfying than on the Tenacious... - This will mainly be due to the almost linerless handle of the Millie (more resonance/sound) and the longer, heavier blade (more satisfying "snap")

Added to my post above:
I happened these two vids for another thread anyway - closing the Tenacious with tumb- resp. indexfinger release, but in the process also open it of course. Does not really show the lock, but at least you can see how easy it is to flick open and hear the "sound of the lock"
Btw and again: The vids also show why I can´t understand the value of the "finger out of the blade path" thing - even with the NO choil Tenacious the edge could not hit my fingers...

Re: s35vn from china
Me and my buddy each got one and we are both liking them. Really good slicer, good ergos, and the blade to handle ratio is awesome. The s35vn takes an excellent edge and performs like decent s35vn from my use so far compared to my other s35 knives. Definitely better than the 8cr model that I have. The centering is a little off, but that is pretty much the only complaint I have.

Re: s35vn from china
Based upon all the positive feedback on the S35VN Tenacious I was really looking forward to the fully serrated s35VN Resilience. Sadly it is not to be. According to Sal, the manufacturer lacks the capacity to do full serrations and can only do 50/50 CE. While it is true that the SE K390 Police addresses the large SE folder demand, for me a fully SE s35VN Resilience checks more than a few boxes over the Police K390 SE.
I stopped by a local army surplus store and they happened to have a regular production Resilience in the display case. I wasn't expecting to be wowed, but I was more than a little impressed. Build quality was pretty much as everyone has said. I was mostly concerned with the liner lock, but it was tight and solid. No play and a safe 50% engagement.
I like the neutral handle ergonomics with slightly less negative blade angle than the Police. I also prefer the less stabby looking point as well as the less prominent hump which facilitates more comfort in various grip positions. One of the biggest buggaboos for me regarding large knives in the needless (for me) incorporation of a 50/50 choil That is a very big reason for my preference of the Resilience design over the Police. When you get right down to it, a fully serrated Police will have a cutting edge of 3.98" vs a fully serrated edge on a Resilience of 4.2" and the Resilience would still have a closed length that is .44 shorter than the Police.
Whether or not K390 turns out to be the greatest Wundersteel for toothy blades remains to be seen, but based upon VashHash's real world experience with serrated s35VN I would have felt that the fully serrated
S35VN Resilience to be a real winner.
Don't know if I'll be getting a serrated K390 Police when they are released as the jury is still out, but it is certain that I'll be getting an S35VN Resilience in PE. Still, the lack of a serrated stablemate will be haunting me.

Re: s35vn from china
Spyderco has made longer serrated blade that are fixed; however, I don't recall if a folder with a serrated blade has been made as long as 4.2" If not it would be ground breaking so to speak. I don't want so sound like I'm whining because I am very appreciative for all the innovation and choices that Sal & company have brought us. Lest we forget, what we want also has to be good for the company. If Sal says something isn't feasible to produce at this time then I accept that. I'm grateful that he is forward thinking and open minded enough to consider things like this and a high performance K390 Delica. Perhaps evolution in manufacturing process will allow his concepts to grace us yet again.

Now this sounds weird (and would be sad):
1.) The Resilience LW was announced in Reveal 8 in PE,CE and SE, true both for the 8cr and the S35VN version (https://catalog.spyderco.com/Reveal8/?page=4).
Why would they do so and learn just after that that the maker actually can´t do SE?!
2.) All three Resilience LW versions (8cr, 8cr blacked out, S35VN) are even pictured on the Spyderco site in SE! (https://www.spyderco.com/?s=resilience)
(What I still don´t understand: Why the Tenacious LW in S35VN does not come in SE, but only PE and CE. If doing shorter SE sections is easier for the manufacturer, consequently a Tenacious SE should be easier to make than a Resilience SE...)

as far as the pictures on the website, it's not difficult to photoshop something like that. i don't think all the product shots are always real photos. it's also possibly that golden was sent models and ground the serrations themselves for real photos, but that would make the timing of all of this weird.

Sad... and I still wonder WHY this is the case (and why they can´t do at least a S35VN SE Tenacious, I mean they can do it in 8CR, and obviously CAN also grind serrations into S35VN, since it comes in comboedge in this steel...
