Feathersticking with Spyderco
Feathersticking with Spyderco
This video shows how you can use the hook or curved portion of the Tom Brown tracker to featherstick (Make tinder to make fire) by making curls
https://youtu.be/shAkKSc9Vl0
I was wondering if I could do this myself and…
I just held the knife at an angle and pulled towards myself like a draw knife.
Slight convex edge done by me helps control the fine cutting.

Re: Feathersticking with Spyderco
Nice, but did you mean Tim Wegner?

Isn’t Tom brown a 21st century Indian tracker & survival guide?

The video shows using the Tom Brown Tracker knife to make the curls using the hook portion of the blade right before the belly portion.

Re: Feathersticking with Spyderco
Sorry that I worded it in a slightly confusing way.
The knife I used was the Tim Wegner but I was trying to emulate the result of the Tom Brown.

Re: Feathersticking with Spyderco
Feathersticks are fun. With practice, one can make them using most any sharp knife. I make curls by pushing the knife away from me.
Re: Feathersticking with Spyderco
That upswept blade of the chef should be pretty good as you have demonstrated there. Good work!

Re: Feathersticking with Spyderco
I’ve had the Tim Wegner model on my mind recently and just assumed everyone else has as well. :p

Re: Feathersticking with Spyderco
Thank you. Also, I used to think that I needed a plain edge to make feathersticks. After reading the comments on this forum regarding serrated blades, I tried it and found that I could make curls with them as well. Amazing!
Re: Feathersticking with Spyderco
Well, actually Spydercos SE produces finer and more useful for firestarting curlings than PE.
Perhaps the most underrated advantage of SE.
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)
