This is interesting.

Can anyone tell me how corrosion resistance and edge retention is compared to the standard S30V model?

I’ve never owned or used a knife with CTS-XHP so I have nothing judge it against.
Not great per Larrin's testing over at Knife Steel Nerds - https://knifesteelnerds.com/2019/10/14/ ... e-testing/.

I like CTS-XHP for ease of sharpening relative to the edge retention, but it's nowhere close to having M390/204P/20-CV level corrosion resistance.

Take my experience with a grain of salt, but for my work/EDC purposes (boxes, paper, tape, CAT-5/CAT-6 insulations, a few copper twisted pairs, etc.) I find edge retention a bit above S30v, and corrosion resistance just a bit below - mind you, I live in the tropics and I sweat a lot.

The only time I ever saw XHP having a hint of rust was on the etched Spyder logo on my Slysz Techno 2, and that's about it, acceptable given the amount of humidity we have here.

Of course, YMMV. But it is a testament to XHP to perform well in tropical conditions, and why it is one of my top 5 blade steels.

My Shaman lineup is more than full, but this looks like a great one. No doubt it'll be a hit!

I love the XHP on my Chap.
In my totally layman experience it holds an edge just like S30V, but is easier to sharpen.

I can't weigh in on corrosion resistance since for whatever reason I just can't really rust any steel, even when carried a lot iwb in sweaty trailruns. True for the XHP Chap too (though looking at it: Perhaps it has developed a tiny black spot - ?)
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

Good to know...

I’ve here good things about the CTS-XHP and I really would prefer something other than the standard version of the Shaman. Not that black G10 and S30V are a bad thing, it’s just kind of vanilla these days.

Isn't XHP kind of like D2 with a little more chromium, a little less vanadium, and a PM steel? Should be pretty tough and hold a good edge, but not exactly a "super steel" now that we're spoiled with stuff like K390, S110V, Maxamet, etc.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

You can't go wrong with this Shaman purchase... it's roughly about the same price as the S30V non-dlc version ($210), but you get Stonewashed XHP and a nice orange G-10 handle. Plus Cutlery Shoppe has some awesome goodies like stickers, candies and flight tags shipped with each exclusive order.

It is a PM steel, how that differs from a CPM steel... I don’t know. Also I’ve read it’s running about 61 HRC. CTS-XHP is no slouch. I was just curious to hear some peoples experiences with it.

CPM is Crucible's PM process, though CTS-XHP is made by Carpenter (The C in CTS). All CPM-XXX steels are PM, not all CTS-XXX ones are. XHP started life as a project to combine the corrosion resistance of 440C with the higher obtainable hardness levels of D2.

I wish Spyderco used XHP as the base steel for Golden and Taichung models instead of S30V. I like it a lot better; easier to sharpen, good edge holding, and a lot less prone to chipping (I cut some zip ties with my Chaparral today with one small dull spot after; cutting fewer ties with a thicker S30V blade in the past left it with so many chips it looked serrated).

I've also never noticed any issues with rust or corrosion in real world use.

You're a couple years too late for the Para 3 boom. Honestly...very happy to see it has slowed down to a trickle! Cutlery Shoppe has already had it in the satin and dlc version anyways.

Certainly starting to look that way! Can't argue that. Definitely never saw it coming either.

Well under a minute if the last one is anything to go by.

XHP has pretty good corrosion resistance. I lost a Cold Steel XHP knife in the woods once, found it 2 rain soaked weeks later, and there was only superficial staining that I stopped off later. S30V can pit inside a sweaty pocket. They're about the same.
