What’s your best made Spydie?

#1

Post by jdw »

I had a bunch of knives out over the weekend doing some general maintenance and I wondered what is your best made Spydie for sheer build quality? Mine would be my Gayle Bradley in a photo finish with the KW CF/Ti Military. The funny thing is that I use the GB like a workhorse but I hardly ever use the Military even though I am sure that it could carry the load. For a specific knife, the knife gods smiled at me on my REX45 Manix. I received a flawless version that is tighter than the other Manixes that I own. That’s it for me and I am just wondering about your experiences?

Might be my Advocate. It's virtually flawless. It looks and feels so perfect, I would have a hard time to use it rough. I do carry it from time to time, so it may come to that - though the risk is quite low. Nevertheless, it's a piece of Art......

Sage 2. The Phoenix is really cool, but there a few issues that keep it from being on the same tiers as the Sage.

Interestingly both knives you mention are among my favorites and best behaved Spyderco knives, though my use profile is the exact opposite of yours.

Other standouts are my Titanium UKPK and both versions of the Sage 3.
Honestly though, I haven't really found there to be much difference in execution across my collection, so the way I think about it is usually by taking note of the few disappointments...
Of all my many Spydies the Cat, Alcyone and two early split spring UKPKs are the only ones that are a bit substandard.

I've said it here before, my Yojimbo 2. Probably followed closely by my Chinook 3. My older S35VN Native is a tank also!

I have not used a ton of different Spydies, but 3 best so far were:
- GB1 (incredibly smooth and solid knife)
- GB2
- Brouwer

I'd say my Southard is way up there. You'd have to go way up the price ladder to something like CRK or custom to get a better fit and finish.

Probably my Kapara. They are all pretty darn good, but this one stands out a bit.

While all my Spyderco’s are perfect, my Drunken really takes it to another level. Every part of the Drunken it truly exceptional, including the clip!

Fit and finish on my Slysz bowie are top notch, but the knife that really impressed me was the Nilakka.

I love the Nilakka. I was able to pick one up 2nd hand recently for a reasonable price. It’s lovely, but the swedge grind is a little longer on one side. No big deal, but it would otherwise be perfect.

For me I have to say it’s the Proficient or Zoomer. Both of those knives feel like customs to me. Amazing craftsmanship and quality.
