This is an odd one. I never hear anybody talk about their Rock Lobster?

It was an odd model that didn't seem to get much attention until it started getting modded, then it turns into a whole different beast.

So David did you do this mod yourself?

I did. It's really not that difficult to be honest, as long as you can "carve" with a Dremel and make the bevels on the edges of the G10 to match the factory.

When I did mine I originally posted the work in a "show your mods" thread. This has all the progress pics.

Here's the original thread that inspired me. My work is on page 3.

Here's a thread I made back in 2016 asking for a RL sprint. It only took 5 years for it happen LOL

Also concerning price....I made this thread way back in 2010 asking why the original was so expensive...
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=44916&p=601704&hili ... er#p601704

MSRP back then was $329.95 according to my post, but I didn't mention what the street price was but I remember it being somewhere around $200. Today the MSRP of this sprint was $340.00 and that's with a pretty hefty steel upgrade (though I can't say what the cost difference between M4 and VG10 are, I hear VG10 is expensive?). I'm going to guess the street price was very similar back then as it was for this sprint, and considering MAP has gone up a good bit since 2010, the cost of this sprint seems pretty reasonable, at least as far as this already expensive knife was.

I just got mine in. I really like this. Happy I grabbed one. Also happy for this out of the blue exclusive.
Thank you blade hq and spyderco.

Its such a weird cool funky knife.
The ergos are definitely not refined, they are kinda blocky, but... they are better than I thought they would be. For the standard grip anyway.

I like that its a sheepsfoot that also can work on a cutting board, unlike many other sheepsfoot folders.

I know Julia had a problem with finger placement but luckily my hand seems to be about the right size for this knife.

The rock lobster is like the unevolved ancestor of the Spydiechef. It reminds me of the chef a good bit.

Overall its a funky, weird, great knife and I like it.

Oh yeah.
Action is good, lockup is good, blade is centered. Everything is right.

Looks just right for you! I'm sure it was designed for men's hands, which makes sense since probably the majority were bought by men.

Just got mine too, and it already ate some big cardboard boxes a neighbor left lying around... It's easy to see how the handle won't work for everybody, but it fits my hand fine.

Hoping it fits about like that for me.

I was always interested in the design when it was in current production, but the ergonomics looked like they wouldn't work for my hand. One of those knives that once it was gone I regretted not trying one.

Glad BHQ made it possible to get another chance.

Wonder which discontinued model is being brought back next?

Is the Rock Lobster supposed to have 2 washers on both sides of the pivot? Mine has one washer on one side and two on the other.

Agreed.

Seeing David's photo of his mod'd one very much reminds me of the Spydie Chef. As soon as I saw David's photo, I thought, "well, I see where the the Spydie Chef came from."

Very similar, or reminiscent, indeed,

Surprisingly good fit.

On the fence about it. I like it...it feels good in my grip, I love M4, seems to have good geometry, happy to own another humpless spydie.....but looking at it I just don't feel like its going to beat the Millie and Chief for me.

We'll see.
