Living in LA county a CCW is pretty much impossible...

Believe it or not it's actually gotten easier to get a CCW in LA County over the last year. If it's something you're interested in give this video a watch.

For those who carry knives and may end up using them in self defense, I suggest the following organizations for self defense insurance:

USCCA,
https://www.usconcealedcarry.com
https://www.usconcealedcarry.com/attorn ... e=Illinois

CCW Safe,
https://ccwsafe.com/

US Law Shield,
https://www.uslawshield.com/
Good suggestions!

Yea, I'm in the same boat there. I have old injuries that prevent me from running (I wouldn't make it far). If a bear is chasing me Im gonna have to fight the bear so to speak. If I were able to get a permit for a gun, I would. But much like the OP I live somewhere they are hard to come by. Less leathals like kubatons, batons, brass knuckles, and tasers are also restricted or prohibited. Fix blades are not prohibited but restricted. I can carry any Folding Knife I want though, so thats what I carry for self defense.

For the non runners, or for situations where you can't run away, knives like the Yo2 and Matriarch are more than capable of going through multiple layers of clothing. Heck I've seen a Civilian cut through one of those slash resistant shirts.

I was born with a defective aortic valve, so while running is possible, as James Y(Jim) said YMMV. You might get away, and you might not. I played in sports as a kid, and nobody knew why I always turned beet red! I was lucky that I lived to see 26, when I was finally diagnosed.

It's comical that politicians with armed guards always want to take away our weapons of self defense.

Regarding the slash resistant shirts: YES, I too have seen people cut their way through slash proof clothes. They work, but they are limited.

Yojimbo, matriarch, and civilian are over the 3" blade length limit for LA County. Which is probably why OP was asking about small knives to begin with

Michael Janich's 5x5 Yojimbo should be legal.

I'd rather let the guy/gal think about what they want to carry, especially after training. The law makes it a felony rap to carry a longer blade than regulated, but if it's life or death, you might be willing to fight it in court.

Small is OK. I like the Bastinelli Creations PiKa Karambit Fixed Blade Knife, with a 1.65 inch blade, but any small knife can be used in self defense, even a 1/2 inch blade.

Don't use the typical stab or slash motion with it. Put it in the palm of your hand, with blade pointing downward, and make a fist....now strike the opponent with your fist, and slash your way to FREEDOM.

ABSOLUTELY NOT! While a knife that small is fine for work I definitely would not consider it a self- defense option. I would suggest a Tropen or the Endura 4. Both come in better steel and are VERY lightweight for a knife this size. Razor sharp out of the box, and fit your hand well so your able to get a full 4 finger grip. But if your pride allows you running is a great option. But what if they catch you? Definitely need a good knife on you. One for each pocket.

Really folks, carry a gun. If you are actively going to a place where you are actually threatened, then know your legal requirements and carry a firearm.

Even if you carry a knife for self defense never admit it. It's just a tool. You would never carry it for self defense, even if you would. :)

I think that's a really good point. That's one reason I don't carry the Yojimbos that I own. Those are advertised as SD weapons and any good lawyer will figure that out in about a minute and use it against you. I carry a humble 3" caly, which I use as a tool at work. A Caly 3 is a gentleman's folder, a work knife, but nobody considers it a SD-designed weapon.

I was working in Columbus, Ohio in a bad area, and went to pick up lunch one day for my guys at Wendys. I had to park in the back of building and walk in. As I got out of the truck, I seen two shady characters coming up the sidewalk.

Sure enough they yelled at me. " they were canning and the machine ripped them off". I reached into my front pocket and gave them all the coins I had, and they left.

Another time I was pumping gas and a guy came up with rolled up newspaper trying to sell me gold necklaces.

Another time at dark at 6 am a woman flagged me down saying her kid was missing, I drove away feeling bad but wouldnt let her in my truck.

Guys I worked with said **** no, dont stop, and let them fool you.

I have a Yojimbo and will carry it when I want. If a scumbag lawyer tries to say I was looking for a fight, F them. Stand up, dont sit down.

I dont carry a knife for self defense. I actually worry some times if I got into a wrestling match with a bad guy, he would take my knife and stab me. Same as a cop I would imagine.

This thread has me going to buy pepper spray for my wife and mother, and me.

I have no real martial arts training and even less edged weapons training. For me, what self defense knife would be recommended, and why?
Hey, K1.
I worked in DTLA until a couple months ago. My time there was the best of my career, and my travels through the streets were indeed eye-opening. Luckily, bums are generally not trained fighters and are in no condition to engage in much physical activity. On the other hand, they're crazy and they carry diseases. Your wisest option is to maintain distance. If they approach, disengage.

But that's not what you asked. You asked about micro knives for self defense. No thanks--not for me. You claimed no martial-arts training. That's an easy thing to fix. I'll bet there's a school less than a mile from where you're sitting. You mentioned CCW's. Be aware that Sheriff Villanueva is now issuing permits to those who have legitimate business reasons. I can't be more specific, but there are CCW's being issued. With that said, you'd still want to obtain training. That's the key whether you just have your hands, a gun, a knife, or a pointy knitting needle.

I'll definitely look into the issuance of CCWs right now.
Pepper spray seems like a good option, my concern though is the multiple reports of blowback where the mace ends up disabling the victim rather than the attacker.
Between a Yojimbo and a Civilian, which would be a better choice? Is a Yojimbo more for people trained in edge combat?

I believe that all of California has ridiculous CCW processes where nothing qualifies as "justifiable cause " for a CCW, so it's a defacto ban on CCWs.
Here is the actual law:

Regarding CCWs in LA County it says here that it's all just for show, nothing's really changed.

It seems that you do not listen to what the vast majority of members who have experience in this matter are telling you. And surely it is because you already have your decision made: you are going to buy a knife in any case.

If so, and you want to take the huge risk of carrying a knife without having training to use it, buy one that can be primarily identified/justified as a work/sports knife (Endura or Stretch if the length is legal in your area or Delica or Urban / UKPK otherwise). Don't ever carry a Yojimbo or Civilian because they are knives that are sold as "designed for SD" and in case of problems you will find out what the scumbag lawyer on duty may be capable of. And I assure you that it will not be pleasant at all, no matter how much you think that standing up is the right thing to do.

The Civilian is very dangerous for someone who is not familiar with the use of knives. I have had one for over 20 years. The chances that you will end up cutting yourself with it are very high in any case. But if you add the fright/surprise/stress factor, the Civilian in the hands of someone not trained to use it, at an unexpected fight, is a recipe for disaster.

I was wondering about the Civilian because it's history says it was developed for use by agents with no training.

GET A GUN and a CCW.

A license to carry weapons does not give you the right to use them at your will without consequences. Only Bond (James Bond) had a license to kill. ;)

Carrying a weapon without perfectly knowing how and when to use it can be counterproductive. The false security that it gives can lead to a decrease in the level of precaution that someone unarmed has (and that allows him to avoid dangerous situations) and to increase the risk of disaster: because it is misused and ends up injuring oneself or because it is misused and ends up causing unnecessary death or injury costing your own ruin (in financial and moral terms).
