Spy27 models ?

#1

Post by S-3 ranch »

New here so I have to ask as I can’t find it in the spyderco product guide, which models use spy27? As IMO cpm steel is very close in my needs I would like to try some I don’t possess, or just buy a hap40 stretch 2 on secondary market for ranch , and hunting purposes
TIA

The models that I'm aware of are:
Para 3 Lightweight - C223PCBL
Native 5 Lightweight - C41PCBL5
Manix 2 Lightweight - C101PCBL2

Might be others.

I have a Manix 2 LW in SPY27 and a Para3 LW with SPY27, so far loving them both, its feels similar to S30V to me but its sharpens easier and takes a wicked edge like BD1N.

My dad has it in a Native 5 Lightweight and loves it. I, however, have the pleasure of sharpening it and really like the steel in that aspect.

Go to Spyderco.com> On the home page there is a banner that changes... Just below the banner, all the way to the right side, select "View All Products"> On the left side of the screen you can select the "Steel" drop down menu and tick the steel(s) that you would like to see.
There is a tick box for CPM SPY27 & CPM SPY27™ for some reason.

Or you can just click here... https://www.spyderco.com/?s=SPY27 ... That search page also brings up the previous Spy27 Mule Team fixed blade as well as the upcoming Colorado PM2 sprint run in Spy27. :)

Best as I can tell, there's a Manix LW, Para 3 LW, and Mule Team that exit in Spy27 at the moment.. all are great options.. I hope to see more. :)

I just sharpened my Native 5 in spy27. It was super easy and fast. The burr comes up immediately, no need to use any diamonds or CBN.

As far as I know right now there are 5 models with CPM-Spy27 available...

Native5 LW
https://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details/C41CBL5/1879

Manix2 LW
https://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details/C101CBL2/1843

Para3 LW
https://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details/C223CBL/1842

Mule Team
https://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details/MT28/1880

And the yet/soon to be released PM2
https://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details/C81GCOFL2/1903
Thanks!
That’s a dang shame spyderco went and created a signature cpm steel and basically doesn’t offer it in a full lineup, seems I could close my eyes and shuffle the product guide and Land on S30v blade steel , must be some reason? But I am a newby on here

I would love to see it in Sage 5 - would be one more reason to give it a try (nothing wrong with S30V, just to be clear).

100% agree nothing wrong with S30v , lots of manufacturers using it, buck , benchmade, ect
My point is I am curious about why spy27 has basically been shelved for the spyderco lineup?

Hasn’t been shelved. It’s a new steel and is being rolled out. The Manix LW is a great knife and the SPY 27 a substantial upgrade over BD1N IMO. I do like my Manix in BD 1 and I think it was my first Spydie so I won’t be getting rid of it. There’s a lot to like about SPY 27 and I expect it will be available in a wider range of knives by and by if the buying public purchases the knives made with it.

My first “real” knife after I transitioned from SAK’s was a Manix 2 LW in BD1N. I’ll always keep it in the collection. It got me started on all this knife madness.

Hi Ranch,

As said above, SPY27 is being progressively rolled out, and I think we’ll see it in many more models.

Personally, I’m hoping we’ll see it in some kitchen knives too.

Although Spyderco no doubt perform extensive in house R&D on new steels, there’s also an ongoing phase of ‘real world’ testing, which anyone can participate in by buying and using a knife in that steel and sharing their experiences with it here on this forum.

Sales have an influence as well on what future models are offered in the steel.

Btw, the HAP40 Stretch was the ‘1’ model - it never came out in the Stretch 2.

You might like the upcoming K390 Stretch 2 as a ranch knife. :) ;)

Except for the Spy27 Mule, I think that’s all of them.

I’m really hoping they make more models in this steel, specifically the Military & Native Chief.

I have the Spy27 Mule and I’m quite impressed with its performance so far. I have carried it for EDC every day since it’s release. It’s holding its edge nicely.

I would like to see the Native Chief in SPY27 (or at least in S45VN). And once SPY27 becomes more commonly used in the lineup, for models with it to stay at the same price point as S30V. Not that S30V is bad; I like it. But it would be nice to try one of those two new steels, and without the price going up significantly for them.
