Lubricating knives with no liners and/or no washers

#1

Post by Fred Sanford »

Do you lube your knives that have no washers and/or liners?

Native 5 Lightweight, Dragonfly 2, Salt line, what do you do? You run 'em dry or you still oil them? My experience as of late has been that oiling them makes no difference at all, especially after you break 'em in. I think for now I will continue to not oil them as most plastics seem to have a little lubricity.

What say ye?

Thanks,
David

I only oil them if they are tool steels (or ZDP) and I want to protect them from corrosion. My experience has also been that lubricating them after a few weeks of break-in doesn’t do a whole lot to improve action.

Its the lockbar on tang action that can bother me if they sit for a long time.

I dont worry about the frn wearing out.

It is interesting though, there does seem to be less of a need to oil once broken in.

I have read that it unnecessary, and it is probably true. I still use a bit of Ballistol every now and then though, and it does make some difference.

I use Boeshield T-9 on my one linerless salt, and that’s only because it’s somewhat waterproof and doesn’t wash off the lockbar interface as easily as some others. Running, sweating, and rinsing it daily does a number on that part. If I go more than a few months the lockbar starts to grip the tang and the action starts to feel almost gritty. I don’t feel that I need it on the FRN washers though.

I oiled my caly 3.5. It's zdp though so it is mostly to prevent corrosion.

Sometimes it doesn't matter, because the blade actually hits the scales far from the pivot area. This is most pronounced during closing of the blade. It is about a year old Native 5 Salt.

I use the same method on them as my others. Generous drop of mineral oil in the pivot, tap the bottom of the handle until the oil penetrates both sides of the pivot, cycle the action a few times then wipe off any excess oil.

Hornady One Shot firearm dry lube! It's a fantastic corrosion inhibitor to boot.

I put mineral oil on all pivots, regardless. Simple to remove gunk if/when it builds up.

I use very little lube on my linerless FRN knives. Once they are broken in I don't think they need much.

I usually find it only makes the action worse to add oil. At least that’s the case with the 4ish frn natives and the one seki salt I’ve used 10 weight nano oil on.

I’m sure different oil formulas interact much differently with frn than others though so who knows. Sounds like work for larrin :D
