I started carrying a flashlight every day specifically because I was tired of draining the battery on my phone all the time. The flashlights on phones eat the battery up pretty quick.

Flashlights on phones are meant for people like me, who use them once every six weeks :D

For frequent and daily use one has to use a real flashlight, I have no doubt.

It's like the little pen that some Victorinox carry; it is intended for one-off use and as a substitute for a real ballpoint pen when you are in the middle of nowhere and don't have one available. But if you use it often ....

I hate to bring in the dreaded "Car Analogy", but Spyderco Knives are like Sports Cars.

Who needs a dozen Sports Cars?
Who wants a dozen Sports Cars?

I've been saying for a while now it would be really interesting if Spyderco would make a version of the Military with a disposable blade (probably 1.5mm thick), where the handle is the important part and you get to buy a 10 pack of blades for $25.

(That sort of design might be a good case for introducing the Stop Lock.)

You're absolutely right. They never bother to think, for example, of the poor teachers who need to correct their students' essays during a break on a hiking trail and left the red pen at home thinking that with their Victorinox they didn't need anything else ... ..

Not me. I prefer a dozen friends who own Sport Cars ... Same fun and no costs ;) :D

1.5 mm might be a bit too thin for a linerlock (not enough lock interface)...?
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

While I don't look to do a cost/benefit analysis of a hobby, Spyderco has priced themselves into a higher end luxury category for most. I find my hobby proceeding in the sub-$50 category for folders. Surprising how good they've gotten.

It seems to me that Spyderco manufactures wonderful solutions (and I hope that they will keep doing it for the next 200 years), we buy them ... and then we have to desperately search for the problem (for the solution that we just added to our pocket or our collection).

...
I used to eat an apple like a 'normal' person. Now I core it, slice it into small pieces, stopping short of carving it into a little figurines, before enjoying it.

My EDC habits changed quite a bit too. Although a lighter and flashlight were were a common item for me, now I have a knife, a flashlight, and a lighter in every bag and every car. And now I have to worry about keeping all these knives sharp; keeping all the batteries charged or cycled; making sure the fullest lighter is in my most used gear, especially with April twenty coming up :D

Solutions should simply things, I thought...

Solutions are the answers to problems. However, when one puts the cart before the horse, solutions usually become problems ....

I’m a surveyor (of usually old buildings) so my flashlight gets used waaaaaay more than my knife.

Other than technical equipment, my county-com tool steel widgy pry-bar gets used next most, but I can’t make myself buy (to use and trash) an expensive Lynch one, regardless of how pretty they are.

C'mon, man! It's a matter of style. And style isn't cheap :D ;)
Touché! :D
