Why is the Rockjumper so big?

#1

Post by Doc Dan »

From the pictures I've seen, the Rockjumper is as large as a Manix 2. Why is it so large and not as slim and trim as a Delica? It seems to me that if it were Delica sized it would be easier to carry rock climbing.

I don´t think the RockJumper is as large/wide as a Manix 2, but it certainly comes close. Some of this will be due to the wharnie.blade, a Leaf Jumper might be slimmer in carry.

I actually would not mind its width in climbing, since in return I get that great handfilling handle. What many climbers will like to see though is an even lighter, linerless, high viz version (and a RockJumper Salt in toxic green would deliver just that).

On climbing days where I really want "just" a slim, light emergency knife, I´d bring the new ffg Salt 2 in wharnie SE.
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

Hi Doc,

The goal of the project was to bring the cutting edge close to the handle in a lock-back folder. I just picked a good working size to test the concept. It had nothing to do with the Delica or even a size limitation.

Are we certain that slim and trim is better for climbing, or is a more full/secure grip better?

As a climber, I'd still pick a SE Delica over the RJ. As a knife lover, I'd pick the SE RJ over nearly anything else when lots of cutting tasks needed to be done.

Climbers just don't use knives often. If a knife comes out, it's because you're cleaning somebody else's mess, or you're having a very bad day.

Thanks, Sal. I get it, now. Cool knife, by the way.

I noticed that while the blade is approximately 1/4 inch longer on the Manix 2 the cutting edge is nearly identical between the Manix 2 and the Rockjumper.
