Drop point love?

#1

Post by Fireman »

Any love for drop point Spyderco knives?
I am imagining a drop point version of a Shaman and it is sticking in my brain.
It would make for a helova folding hunter/bushcraft with the similar grind as the Shaman.

I like drop points a lot, but the only drop point Spyderco I can think of is the Stretch, which is quite a unique drop point.

Which Spydies are you thinking of?
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

I like Spyderco drop points. The only one I owned was a UKPK, and I think it looks better than the spear point version. Never owned a Stretch, but I've been on the lookout for one lately.

Just skimming the catalog: Amalgam, Bradley, Brouwer, Centofante 3, Kapara, SpyOpera, Stretch, UKPK and I'm sure I missed a few.

I would like a fixed Subvert blade style.
I was thinking of this kind of bark river look on a Shaman with a spydie twist.

YES! Bob Loveless Drop Point Hunter is an all time favorite! Yes, I'm a hunter. However, I do EDC a UKPK drop point and a Stretch drop point; both I like very much!!! There were some older drop point models I am interested in but I don't find them at reasonable prices. I believe they were collaborations with a guy by the name of Jim Wagner & Spyderco.

At least a couple of the Bradley's are drop point or close. But yeah, I would like to see more drop points from Spyderco. And yes, Loveless shined a light.

I could not find where Spyderco names the blade shape on the Tenacious. I have used the tenacious a lot for hunting and other tasks. I have always thought the Tenacious was drop point. Blade HQ calls it drop point. Is it drop point? I am blade shape curious but can never bring myself to buy any other shape over drop point.

Go to DLT or Knivesshitfree and look under BRK classic drop point hunter.

Does anyone else feel like it's kind of hard to classify Spyderco blade shapes when compared to other designs? I look at a "drop point" Stretch, for example, and I really don't think drop point in a classical sense. I see the Loveless designs, or even the Waterway as a more traditional drop point, where the tip drops down below the spine toward the end. Just a consequence of being unique and innovative I suppose.

It’s an old design well suited for hunting needs. The dropped point allows you to open the abdominal cavity of a large animal like a zipper using a grip where the edge points up to the sky. The point won’t penetrate too deeply in to the peritoneum, potentially rupturing organs that can taint the meat. The hide gets cleanly sliced by the belly of the blade acting like a sharp ramp as you slide it down your incision.

It’s a pretty good general use point design too, well suited for a variety of piercing and tip-using tasks.

Drop point: yes! Love my Stretch, and loved the DP UKPK before I replaced it with a leaf shaped S110V version.

A DP Shaman? Noooooo............. leave it the way it is!
