Allright good, this has nothing to do with me.
Not that Im secretly doing anything weird to my Shamans...

I only watched the first minute of the video. Blasphemy I say! The handle is what makes the Shaman the Shaman. I could see wanting a different material or more grip but changing the shape? No thanks.

Also with that handle shape, and once you have spent that much money, why not just get a Strider or something.

The idea is to have two Shamens in my book.

Haha, you were the first thing that popped into my mind when I saw the thread title! (shows I hang out here waaaaaaayyyy too much :p )

I 100% agree with you on the handle. It's really what makes the Shaman what it is. I've got the G10 and Micarta models, and both are extremely comfortable in hand. I couldn't imagine changing the handle!

We may not all agree on aftermarket scales or redesigns, but I applaud Spyderco for leaving enough "meat on the bones" for the aftermarket designers to work with. My Shamans will stay with the factory profile, but I have a Para3 with a "skinny mod" which I love.

I would love to see some custom handles that would be "fatty" and not "skinny". I am actually thinking of making a short video as of why I THINK it MIGHT be of interest.

I don't understand why people change the scales and grind off the nub... I think the Shaman is perfect as is! I love Sal's handle shapes. They're the only ones that fit my hand perfectly, and no fingers are left hanging. I really get annoyed when I grab a knife handle and my middle finger isn't touching. Happens a lot to me. Eric's designs work as well (he learned from Sal, right? Lol).

To each their own though. I'm so stuck on the Shaman I have trouble putting other knives in my pocket!

Didn't watch but I do kinda like the Strider-ish shaped scales but the loss of the rounded shape is a big pass for me.

Id be curious to get a skinny mod Shaman in hand. Really like that mod on the para3.

Wow. That's... Well...

He seems to like them and that's the important thing.

Reaction to this kind of thing boils down to where you draw the line at when an original design ceases to be what the designer intended.

And does it even matter.

Until Spyderco announces it has gone open-source, that line will matter to me, even if I happened to like some of what I saw (mule deer included) in this particular Striderco video.

I don’t normally mod. Mods that I will purchase must be dimensionally the same so that I do not alter what Spyderco wants me to experience.

If the scale-maker mentioned in the video actually got Sal’s blessing (and Strider’s, too, I should hope), I might be moved to give those scales a try, but probably not.

I’m here for the Glessers’ designs, which are not simply a given design by Sal or Eric (or Mike or collaborators, all Glesser-inflected), but are all the years of learning and risk, not to forget the shaping of a stellar workforce here and there, that have had to be invested to get just that given design to materialize.

Just some idle philosophizing by someone who has done and seen some things, yet has made it this far.

I am thinking 3 maybe 4 is the right number of Shamans (stock, Worker, skinny, and maybe an Aramis variant). That bearded dude sold me on the Workers which turned into another Shaman purchase, and then the skinny scales turned into another one. If the stock shape was the only thing available, I would have a single Shaman. The aftermarket fun on an awesome platform is what draws me in.
