Spyderco Solo?

#1

Post by vivi »

I saw this knife posted for sale and the seller claims its a Spyderco

Spyderco Solo S001PS NIB NOS from 2000 Micarta Gentleman's Knife. Condition is "New". Shipped with USPS First Class.
This is a new in box and never used Spyderco Solo originally purchased in 2000 and always safe kept. This a very rare example Micarta slabs with stainless bolsters collector #78 of 200. Solo knives were marketed by Spyderco in Golden Colorado and were part of their collector program.
Is there any truth to this?

Boom.
There really is a Spyderco without any hole in the blade...
Here https://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details/SO05/Solo/143 on their site, though it looks really different to the one Vivi posted.
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

Yes, Spyderco used to sell the Solo. It's not technically a Spyderco, but is often sold as such.

Spyderco was a distributor for Solo knives, along with some G.Sakai and Moki models, if I remember correctly.

My understanding is that Spyderco distributed Japanese knives, Solos among them, before transitioning into the sale of Glesser-designed blades made by the very makers Spyderco had distributed. Am I wrong?

As has been said, Spyderco distributed it.

Not really a Spyderco. But, still part of their history.

Hi Vivi,

Solo was a brand that we created back in the day. I designed the knife in question. There were a number of models created in 2 sizes. Since our one hand open patent was based on a lobe in/on the blade to catch the fleshy part of your thumb, I took advantage of the language. We were testing many makers back then and we used different designs and brands to see the quality and delivery of a new maker.

The original sun/moon concept was first introduced on a Solo, but the maker couldn't make them consistently and the Micarta kept cracking.

Hope that helps.

Wow, I learned something new. I never knew that the Solo's were indeed Spydercos designed by Sal.

Looks like I learned something new, too! I never realized Solo was an in house brand. It's almost like it was the first Byrd knives.

I always liked the looks of those Solo knives, but I never thought to pick one up until they were long gone. They look like they would carry well.

The original Solos are very nice knives and I think that the design would make a great candidate for a Spyderco slip-it model. It would have a classy and traditional vibe.

Correct and that's not the only brand of knife that Spyderco used to sell along side of their main line up. G-Sakai and a couple of other brands which escape me at the moment go all the way back to the "IRONSTONE" days ( mid to late 90s). I've been told that those Solo folders are not bad at all.

I used to love the IRONSTONE catalog back in the late 90s>> they had a lot of interesting items. I do remember those Solo knives would show up in those IRONSTONE catalogs. I do know for a fact that those G-Sakai folders and fixed blades they sold in those catalogs were a really decent knife. I had a couple of those and I wish I had them back.

The thumb stud looks ergo & comfy.

Not sure what it would do while slicing a tomato.
