Sgian Dubh, Who wants a Spyderco version?
Sgian Dubh, Who wants a Spyderco version?
A Sgian Dubh is a small fixed blade knife usually worn in the sock of a Scottish man when in full regalia. (Kilt) Sgian Dubh means black knife and probably referred to the color of the knife, with bog oak being one of the usual handle materials. Most commonly it is a small spear shaped blade. (Some are actual daggers with both sides sharpened.)
I think a Spyderco version would be a great addition to Spyderco's Ethnic series of knives.
Who agrees?

Re: Sgian Dubh, Who wants a Spyderco version?
I'd love to have a Spyderco Sgian Dubh. Right now I have a Boker Sgian Dubh, in 440A, which is a terrible steel.
If Spyderco considers this hopefully they will make a very large run out of some excellent steel. I'd prefer a dagger, with both sides sharpened. Bog Oak? Sure!!!

I love the idea. I've been wanting a real boot knife, but I think a sock knife would work just as well.

Kind of like the Nightstick? Is that not traditional enough?

A fixed or folding? Kind of like Ed Schempp's Euroedge? Maybe Ed can work on a design while he is recuperating from hip replacement surgery. A speedy recovery Ed!

Hi Julia,
You've been "Bloked". I guess we can put a slot in your boot for one?
Hey Gdwtvb,
Are you thinking fixed or folder?
What is the proper pronunciation?

"Ski-an doo" and yes please! A smaller, more ornate version of the Nightstick would be lovely.

Re: Sgian Dubh, Who wants a Spyderco version?
I like it!
Almost like a fixed bladed ethnic Spyderco.
I sincerely hope there can be more variety in Spyderco’s fixed blades. They always have what I want.
Especially regarding design and performance based blade/handle geometry.

Re: Sgian Dubh, Who wants a Spyderco version?
Best I can tell the proper pronunciation is "Skeen Doo" or "Ski-en Doo". I've always loved smaller fixed blades, so fixed blade would be my choice. LC200N would be a natural choice for the steel but M390 or one of its clones would be great too. The design would be close to the nightstick, but no choils more like the Puukko, and shorter, about 7 inches OAL. Dark Micarta handles, perhaps flatter than traditional Sgian Dubh knives but nicely contoured like the wonderful Shaman. Most of the more modern ones are dressed up with silver or stones/gems in the pommel, I would suggest something more modest.

Re: Sgian Dubh, Who wants a Spyderco version?
I'd be well up for that.
I hardly ever carry a real Sgian Duhb when I wear a kilt. I actually usually carry a stag handled bottle opener because most version are so rubbish.

For the UK, a slip joint version that could be carried legally is interesting.

Re: Sgian Dubh, Who wants a Spyderco version?
I was prepared to make a bold statement about how I'd prefer that Spyderco focus production on the current lineup (where are you Swick 5?!) versus introducing another new model, but my Scottish heritage is getting the better of me here.. I would definitely be interested in the sgian dubh that you describe, Grizz. I especially appreciate your suggestion of "something more modest," as any embellishment would probably put me off the knife..gdwtvb wrote: ↑Wed Feb 10, 2021 9:44 pmBest I can tell the proper pronunciation is "Skeen Doo" or "Ski-en Doo". Re: Sgian Dubh, Who wants a Spyderco version?
Make it a fixed blade please and take my money! :)
I have heard 'Skeen duuv' but i guess there's more than one way to pronounce it, with all the dialects and accents.

Re: Sgian Dubh, Who wants a Spyderco version?
A "user" would be something pretty unique most Sgian Dubhs sold here are overpriced pieces of tat.
If worn with a kilt it can be legally carried in the UK as part of national dress.
I'd like either a fixed blade or a folder that could also be carried with a sheath in the locked open position.

Re: Sgian Dubh, Who wants a Spyderco version?
I remember years ago CS had a fixed blade boot knife called the "Braveheart". A Spyderco version would be a big step up, 5-6 inches blade perhaps?
