What’s next for SPY27 ?

#1

Post by elena86 »

I really like SPY27 and I hope it’s going to become a default steel for the production line. Looking forward to a Millie in SPY27. I also hope it’s going to be outsourced to Taichung... a Sage1 or 5 in SPY27 would be super cool. Maybe Sal will throw us a bombshell

I think, in time, a lot of S30V and S35VN models will be moved to Spy27. But there are too many, so they are doing it gradually.

If SPY27 is going to make its way to a Sage model, the Sage 2 gets my vote.

Why not ?! In fact, I like the framelock quite a lot.

Hi Elena,

We really don't have a list other than in Eric's and my head. We're doing our second pour. I'd like a Lt Wt Shaman in SPY27, a P4 and a few others.

Hi Archangel,

I'm sure you'll see some of those as well.

SPY27 is more expensive to produce to cost does become a factor.

I am VERY interested in a SPY27 Police 4. Would be a great stainless counterpart for the K390 that's an upgrade from VG-10.

A little off topic but do you think Sal say's "hey watch this I'm going to make the forum go nuts for awhile" before he drops some of that info? I wouldn't blame him in the slightest and would no doubt do the same myself. That said, a Sage 2 in SPY27 or in a Sage LW would be awesome. I don't have a Sage 2 yet and that would give me a great reason.

I was hoping Spy27 would become the replacement for S30V on the Para 3 but it looks like S45VN was chosen instead. It seems like S45VN is easier to machine, therefore cheaper to produce, than Spy27. Either way I’m happy to see an upgrade to S30V.

From the SpyderBible Verses according to Sal, SPY27 is a USA made variation of VG-10.

"Creating a new steel is not an easy task and we've been working on this for more than a year. Like anything new in business, it is a gamble. We hope for the best. We've done quite a few new things in the knife industry. Some are better than others, but to not try is to stop.......at least for Spyderco.

CTS-BD1 and BD1N is a USA made variation of a Japanese steel called Gingami 1 made by Hitachi. A very useful and successful blade steel. It was created because of Spyderco working with Carpenter. SPY27 is a USA made variation of VG-10, another useful and successful blade steel made by Takefu that was created by Spyderco working with Crucilble.

If there is a problem with this, I guess I'm not seeing it. Splain it to me?

sal"

It just seems to be more expensive to produce (proprietary = smaller quantities = higher prices, I presume, don't know about machining).

Knifecenter

C101GPBN2 $146.30
https://www.knifecenter.com/item/SP101G ... 10-handles

C101PCBL2 $140.00
https://www.knifecenter.com/item/SP101P ... cp-handles

C101GP2 $126.00
https://www.knifecenter.com/item/SP101G ... 10-handles

In EU, same shop:
SC101GPBN2 - SPYDERCO MANIX 2 M390 Earth Brown - 163.15EUR
SC101PCBL2 - Spyderco Manix 2 lightweigt CPM-SPY27 - 168.91EUR - that's 204USD, love it :D

Between the better and similarly priced (or eventually cheaper) M390 Brown G10 and the FRN SPY27 there's really no contest, proof is that M390 Brown G10 flew off the shelves, SPY27 is still there.

Or can go with the good ol' cheaper S30V model, G10 scales and outperforms SPY27.

https://youtu.be/RXThAauIrIA

Between the cheaper VG10 P4 and a more expensive SPY27 P4 would probably pick the VG10 as it's good enough for me, well, I already did pick one up last year.

So price it's a factor, Spyderco probably has to make and sell a lot of SPY27 models to make the steel cheaper and can't do this for the moment because it's expensive, kinda of a Catch 22.

Would still buy a SPY27 Military just for variety (that is if it's ever made, we've been asking for a Maxamet Millie for a while and gave up hoping). A plain Jane S30V Millie is 230EUR on Lamnia, maintaining proportions I presume a SPY27 version will be over that and according to what I've seen so far less performing than S30V.

That's interesting stuff. Previously I didn't consider the added challenges of having a foundry cook up a custom batch.

While I am not particularly interested in SPY-27 (is someone trying to spy on us? :p ) I would not call it a variation of VG-10 and the composition is quite a bit different. It is actually closer to S30V. But otherwise I agree with what Gsg9 said.

Or are there some other interesting properties (for the user) that SPY27 has to offer?
