S7 Large Camp Knife

#1

Post by vivi »

There's been some fixed blade talk recently, and I mentioned how I'd like to see Spyderco try S7 in a large chopper sized fixed blade. Here's how the steel looks:

Image

Supposedly used for jackhammer bits.

I've used it in the 9" Scrapyard Dogfather for a decade. In my experience with that knife, its hands down the toughest steel I have ever used. Takes a tremendous edge and grinds pretty easily. Will rust easily and won't slice cardboard as long as the high edge retention steels, but its attributes work well in a camp knife.

According to zknives Carpenter has a variation called S7XL

Would anyone else be interested in seeing a chopper sized fixed blade from Spyderco in S7?

I was thinking something in the 9-11.5" range.

Tbh: Never heard of S7, but I trust 100% in your experience and assessment.

So: A large Spyderco Chopper in a really tough steel? YES. :)
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

I haven't tried S5 before. Do you know of anyone making tools with it?

NSM sells it, I've been too busy to try, but the stats are better, I don't think S5 is as common and it may cost a little more so perhaps that's why we don't see it.

That's like saying Blue Man Group guy 1 gets so much more publicity than Blue Man Group guy 3.

S5 and S7 both get no love.

S7 is an ideal SHTF chopper and one of my favorite steel/knife category combos. Great minds... The Tusker knives are made from S7, have you seen those?

Great Scott! Now THAT is some tough steel! S5 at 59 Rc, wow. I am hoping for a tough-steel lightweight or skeleton that I can use for backpacking, but a Mule in these tough steels would do nicely. Thanks for bringing S7 and S5 to my attention.

I like the idea, but I fear it'll be out of my price range in the $350-400 range. Hard to beat an ESEE Junglas or similar for $125. Then again, perhaps I just don't do enough chopping to warrant the higher price tag and performance.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

I have no idea what a hypothetical 9-11" S7 Spyderco would run, but the Dogfathers were around $200 I believe. Not bad compared to all the 1095 knives of similar size in the $100-150 range. Like the RAT9 I compared the Dogfather to.

One of the advantages of S7 over 1095 is it can support thinner edge angles while staying stable chopping and batoning knotty hardwoods. I run my Dogfather with a 15 degree edge, never had it chip on wood.

For me, not a chopper, but I'd be interested in either S7 or 5160 from Spyderco in normal knives, or a return of AUS-6 or 440A, assuming the easier grindability lowers the astronomical current prices.

I had a .33 inch 6 inch knife in S7. Probably the toughest knife I've seen. I got rid of it more because of the design than any failing with performance. Wear resistant it isn't and it's not a high hardness slicing steel but it's very good at what it does.

I've wanted to try an S5 knife for a long time. I believe it would suit my needs better. It's rare to see custom makers who use it.

Same! One of the things I was talking about in the Spyderco machete thread.

Does anyone know where you can buy S5 in something that would be even close to the thickness for a blade?

Scott Gossman makes incredible bushcraft knives with S7. If you can afford it and be lucky enough to find one.
