Slip-it variants
How often are Slip-it versions made of locking knives? I ask because I was surprised by the Lil' Native Slip-it in Reveal 7.

Re: Slip-it variants
Rarely. I may be missing one or two, but I can't think of any besides that one and the "Chinese Gooseberry" version of the Kiwi, at least not where the model name was retained.

Re: Slip-it variants
Well, the UK penknife is basically a slipjoint version of Caly 3

Re: Slip-it variants
There was a Prototype Native Slipit made some years ago. It’s genuinely exciting to see the Lil Native make it to production.

Which is exactly why I qualified my answer.

Perhaps because it really isn't one, there are some differences beside the lock. Or perhaps because, as with several other things, Spyderco's naming conventions defy any logical explanation. Example, why do some models that do not have a clip have a "C" prefix on their model number while others do not?Joshcrutchley1 wrote: Its weird Spyderco changed the name of the Caly 3 and Vesuvius when the lock changed. Then you have the Sage and Manix(maybe more) that have more than one lock type.

I feel like any backlock design could be altered to a slipjoint design.

Technically it’s the reverse. The Caly 3 (model C113) is the locking version of the UKPK (model C94) that was introduced first.

Yeah I overlayed images of both earlier. It looks like there's changes to handle and blade length as well as different pinning. I'm always curious of the stories behind why certain knives are made. I really enjoy the youtube videos Spyderco has put out with collaborators telling the story of their knife. I also like your website it has some amazing content on there. The Deacon wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2021 5:08 pmPerhaps because it really isn't one, there are some differences beside the lock.
I don't look at model numbers much.RadioactiveSpyder wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2021 7:09 pmTechnically it’s the reverse. The Caly 3 (model C113) is the locking version of the UKPK (model C94) that was introduced first.

Oh, I see, I did not consider that possibility, thanks for the info.RadioactiveSpyder wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2021 7:09 pmTechnically it’s the reverse. The Caly 3 (model C113) is the locking version of the UKPK (model C94) that was introduced first.

Except that both can be considered descendants of the C52 Calypso Jr.

I am obviously well aware of this, not really the point of what we’re talking about here in this thread though...The Deacon wrote: ↑Wed Jan 20, 2021 3:59 amExcept that both can be considered descendants of the C52 Calypso Jr.

Re: Slip-it variants
There are some similarities (in size and intent) between the Squeak and Chicago, Meerkat, and their precursors. You could probably say the same about the Urban and Cat.
Re: Slip-it variants
Just a side note ... seeing that burgundy Calypso Jr. ... Spyderco could use that golden mark more often. Looks real cool.
