Does Spyderco Have a Knife w a Glass Breaker?

#1

Post by Naperville »

I was thinking about buying a Spyderco knife for the glove box that was made in H1 steel and serrated. The Spyderco Assist Salt H-1 Knife Yellow FRN (3.69" Satin Serr) C79PSYL looks good for cutting a seat belt, but there is no glass breaker on the tail of it. Does Spyderco make such a knife?

Looking for a Jack of All Trades here.

The assist has one, it retracts into the handle.

The glass breaker on the Assist retracts when not in use. Squeeze the blade into the handle and that weird looking tip pushes a carbide glass breaker out on the butt of the handle.

I keep one in my center console. The SALT model is H1 and just $15 more. Mine is VG 10 which considering how little I use it day to day is fine. It’s really just there for emergencies.

Hi Naperville,

We broke a lot of windows to refine the Carbide glass breaker. The type of carbide, shape of the tip all mattered. We made it retractable because we found that glass breakers just "stuck" on the end of the handle were uncomfortable when exposed and brushed with a hand.

I've always liked that the glass breaker retracts on the assist. It's a clever design detail that really increases the useability of the knife. I had a knife with a carbide glass breaker from another manufacturer that I got rid of specifically because I was always accidentally scratching myself and other stuff with it.

Exactly. That is all that I plan to use it for. I'll get the H1 model because it is going to sit in the car for a decade.

Thanks Sal! I did not even know the glass breaker was there when I looked at the static images on a knife retailer's website. It's a very well engineered product.

not that it's necessary, but the h1 version is lacking the cobra hood that helps open the knife quickly in an emergency, especially when wearing gloves. just fyi.

That’s a good point I didn’t realize that the hood isn’t on the H1 version. I think the hood is a good feature which (I hope never) could be critical if I were in a real emergency.

I've had a vg-10 rescue in my center console over a decade, corrosion shouldn't be an issue if you're not somewhere tropical. It's a knife I hope not to need.
