Your longest period of time WITHOUT a Spydie purchase

#1

Post by archangel »

I know there are many here that have been, and still are, Spyderco lovers for many years but don't in fact buy new Spydies all the time. This is of course totally ok!! I for my part still look forward to see my collection growing every year. Pace has slowed down though, mostly because of my "collecting algorithm". In fact, for personal reasons, I have not purchased any Spydie for over seven months now - I think this is a personal record.

What's your longest period without a new :spyder: ?

I´d really have to research this by looking at old bills of Spydies I bought...

I just know: After my first Spydie, a Delica, it took like half a year till I wanted a larger version of it and came to the Endura.
Then another half year later I researched if there was a "middle ground" version and discovered the Stretch 1 (no Stretch 2 back then existent). All that time I knew nothing about Spyderco as a brand, did not watch any knife vids on the internet, would have no idea who Sal Glesser is and was not aware of this forum. I was just genuinely blown away by ergos and functionality of the three Spydies I had and did not buy more for I guess some years.
Then I got a Manix 2 LW, then I think a Kapara and one or two others .... and then I joined the forum and it was only after that that I started to buy Spydies like on average every six month I guess and reselling some again after I tried them out).

My approach though is not a collection that actually grows, but remains at around a number ten Spydies, which get closer and closer to what I really like in folders, since I find out about that more and more. And: Ten is a number that makes it still possible that all of my Spydies get really used more or less frequently.
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

Last one was last year around April, REX45 Manix 2.
Since then, nothing.
Not sure if I buy something this year, I want to buy a new bow...

I have a feeling this year might be the one where I don't buy anything. Unless Spyderco comes out with a small 3-4" fixed blade that I like, I feel like my folding knife wants and needs are fulfilled.

I took two sabbaticals, one in college when my small collection of the time was stolen, and I actually quite the hobby for a couple years.

Also, 2014 was a really bad year for me financially, and I didn't buy a single :spyder:, or knife for that matter, for the whole year, . I remember, for some reason, New Year's day 2015, I broke the dam back open so to speak, and picked up a CF/XHP Chaparral on Amazon on a whim.

Now I find my collection grows and shrinks in waves, and is a lot less static, as I let things go a lot more which keeps the cash flow for the hobby more balanced. Usually I have one or two (or 5 :o ) every other month coming in and out.

I think it was during the fall of this past year, I went 3 months. Which is pretty crazy considering I've been into Spyderco's for over 3 years. That's a lot of knives haha. This year my purchases will be far fewer. I'm very happy with my current collection, all sorts of different steels in models that I know work for me. I currently don't have any knives that I desire, and that's a pretty good feeling. I'm actually branching out to other brands for the time being (knife nut problems) :p

Last purchase was the LC200N Pac Salt, so I guess a couple of months. Had one Spyie when I joined the forum and it was a blur, until 2020. Only purchased a few knives but picked up several custom scales and clips to dress up a PM2 and my Rex45 Para3.

2018-19 exploded to over 40 spydies or so and 20 or more Byrds (family gifts). Quite a bit of money spent on :spyder: 's since my join date, but I've probably spent more on handle material and tools for my harem of mules! :D

I bought a spyderfly when I was 18 and didn't buy another spyderco until I was 22. So that's the longest period so far.

57 years!!!

But this will not happen again. I seriously decided NOT to wait another 57 years to buy my next Spyderco.

I started the fever in 2017 and I don't think I have gone more than a month without a purchase. Many of those have been sold as my tastes/preferences evolve, but it is still going strong. I have two on the way now! :P

I have accumulated quite a few, and although It’s more than any sane person could reasonably need, I don’t find “collector” to be an accurate description. A curious user, maybe?
And since my “needs” are dictated by my use and experience (mostly), my purchases are triggered by me looking for knives with a certain combination of attributes and not so much what’s new and hot at the moment.
This bites me in the tail sometimes, as it has happened several times that I dismiss a certain model for the longest time, and only realized how ideal it would be for a certain task after it’s discontinued..
On average I’d say it’s been about 3-4 spydercos/year on average since I got my first one.

First Spyderco purchase was in 2005. There have been 1-3 year gaps without any purchases since then, but the longest period without any purchase was about 5 years (2013-2018).

Last actual Spyderco purchase was August 2018, so it's already been over two years since the last one. Although I did get several Byrd knives in 2019.

I would still like a couple of nicer Natives (S90V CF, S110V G10) and the Rex45 Chief.. but otherwise I will enjoy what I have (enough!) and take a back seat. Hunt for an occasional great deal from the shades.

The Province was the last Spyderco knife that I purchased, and that was in 2020.

I've only been "collecting" since 2017 and I buy a few Spydercos every year. 2021 should be a good year. Just waiting to see what my bills look like Feb 4th and we just might be buying one or more at that time!

Let's see.. I was 32 when i bought my first Delica, carried it for 12 years and didn't buy any Spydie in that time. After that it went downhill in a hurry :)

5 months, in 2020. This is in contrast to my first couple of years after getting my first Spyderco, when packages used to arrive almost once a week. Granted some of them were sharpening supplies, scales, etc.

Glad it is easier these days to take breaks.
