Who also wants a hump?

#1

Post by austrian_spyder_fan »

I love the "hump" at the back of the tip on the Jester and the Impala blades.
I whould like to see a Native sized Knife whith this blade shape.
Who is in?

You´re of course talking about the "hump" at the front/tip of the blade, right?

Tbh, I am not sure why I would want this:
Looks like making it harder to retrieve the knife after stabbing something, and while I like wider blades I guess I´d go all the way and give such models a straight spine instead of the "dent" before the hump (and so a consistently wide blade)

But then: Never tried such a blade design, maybe I´d like it! Any practical reasons why YOU do so or is it "just" the looks?
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

Is the Jester in the dragonfly range?
Then yes, love the shape.

I think the hump gived a good ramp for the thumb and also reduces the weight.

For some reason, I don’t recall ever seeing the Impala before now? I like a lot of things about it’s design!
Wouldn’t mind something similar but new.

I loved my Jester; wanna get another someday. I think the little hump with the jimping made a great spot to put your pointer finger. It makes particular sense with a blade of that size.

Looks like a cross between a reverse tanto point and a harpooned tip from those Spyderco customizers.

The A.T.R. also had a similar blade shape.

Is this a purely aesthetic feature? I’m searching for the utility of such a blade shape and can’t figure it out.

Yes, i like the look and at the small Jester put the finger on it (chimping).
So a DFY, Lil Native to Native size whould be suitable.

True, on a small blade the "front hump" might make for a kind of a "finger ramp", did not think of that!
Also, on an otherwise narrower blade it allows for a stronger tip.

As said, I would have to try to see for myself wether I´d like that feature or not! Looks interesting in any case!

/ And it also looks as if your collection is growing quite fast ;) - the more Spydies come to Austria, the better! :D

It creates a nice shelf for resting the index finger tip on precision cuts, at the expense of tip acuteness.

Looks like a great idea for tiny knives where you're not going to use a hammer grip, and knives intended for be used for processing small game.

Exactly right. Sal said, years ago, that's what it was for on the Jester. The Impala was meant for skinning and cleaning game, AFAIK.

So, you enjoy a good hump, do you? Well, who doesn't... (Just kidding, I know you are talking about the front hump...)

I've shilled for a Jesterfly (among others like a Dodyfly, Workerfly, Cricketfly, etc) in the past. I would love to see it!

Love that design. Especially on something smaller or without any gimping or choils or anything like that. It would also help with tip strength I’d think.

I always wondered why the Jester disappeared, it seems like such a useful design. If one showed back up in the lineup in some more steel options I think it’d do well.
Lightly insane.

That finger rest/hump works well on the Jester, and would probably work well on a Dragonfly or Kiwi size blade. It allows excellent control for making precise cuts. OTOH, I'm less sure how useful it would be on a Native size blade. Can say that I find it too far forward to be of any use on the ATR, unless you're gripping the knife by the blade.

I've never had any use for it on the A.T.R. and the Jester is a bit too pricey for something I'd rarely use. However, if they brought back the Jester or used that blade shape on something Dragonfly or Lil Native sized, they'd have my attention.
