Caribbean detent ball broke?

#1

Post by VooDooChild »

So I was closing my caribbean and the detent ball seems to have broken into pieces.

Its ceramic right?
Also its an actual ball isnt it? Its not some semispherical cap glued in place?

Well it seems like the part of the ball that sticks up above the liner sheared off right at the liner.

It actually looks like it broke into three pieces.
The part of the ball that engages with the blade tang sheared off and is probably gone forever. The middle part of the ball is in the liner. And the back part of the ball I guess broke in the same way as the front part, and pulled out of the backpart of the detent ball hole in the liner. This is the part on my finger in the pics.

I guess I will reassemble it and send it to Spyderco to see if they can replace the ball.

Well, now I've seen everything. That's an incredible stroke of bad luck.

I'd guess the way it broke indicates ceramic. Will it stick to a magnet?

Ceramic ball is 100 % ceramic.
That was one of the things that held the production of Caribbean. Sal stated that they had to reassemble a lot of knives and change the ball from steel to ceramic.

If you can't buy and install new one (not easy) you have to send it to Spyderco
