Ladybug/Manbug with Pocket Clip

#1

Post by Knife1 »

I really like the ladybug and the manbug models but for me they're really missing a pocket clip. I've seen a number of ppsts on this forum regarding attaching a pocket clip to these models via the lanyard hole, but I tried attaching a dragonfly pocket clip and it didn't work out at all, perhaps I did it wrong. So I'm wondering if anyone has any other suggestions or if anyone knows if any models very similar to these two but with a pocket clip? I've tried both the MacBee as well as the new Pochi but neither has the ergonomics of the ladybug and manbug.

Thanks

You could use one of these clips I use on my SAK that I got off Amazon. I carry that knife every day (granted not used very often) but I've had the clip for around 2 years now and it's still got great retention.

I believe Sal currently has a design in the works for both a Ladybug and Manbug with a clip. Not sure if they will make it to market or not though.

Peter and I have been working on this for a long time. Finding an easy attachment method that will also work for previous models is challenging. We've drawn and built protos for wires (single and double) as well as flat clips.

I usually carry a small knife with me along with a larger model. I think a clip would be a nice feature. I've carried protos and clip them to my shirt pocket, which works well.

Haha! Sorry about that, was the best pic I had handy that shows that TEC clip...just so happened to have the UKPK in it as well.

Great news! Any estimate as to when these might be seeing their release?

Hi Knife1,

We haven't yet found the optimal solution.

I use those too and they work great. I've tried them on SAKs, flashlight, full sized multitools etc. Great solution.

Maybe don't worry about the clip being backwards compatible and make it a CQI-ish type thing. Treat it like a Dragonfly with the wire clip and have the slots in the frn. That way it's a leave it on or take it off situation. Just a thought.

I might have an idea in regards to making a clip with backwards compatibility.
Excuse the rudimentary paper cutout, but it gives a better illustration than 10 lines of additional text would :p

Basically you'd be repurposing the lanyard hole since the FRN models don't have additional screws at the rear.
You'd need a thicker part at the clip's base in order for a screw to pass through the lanyard hole and attach.
(this would only require a small portion of the clip to be thick enough to allow for screw tapping)
Since you'll be working with a single mounting point, you'll need a way to counteract movement of the clip.
As you can somewhat see in the picture, you could extend and bend the clip to follow the knife's butt.
Both the Ladybug and the Manbug have a curve here, so lateral movement would blocked from either direction.
A tiger has claws.
A wolf has teeth.
An eagle has talons.
We, have Spyderco.

The Clipitools are Manbug sized, with a clip and bonus extra serrated blade/bottle opener/scissors.

Hey Sal,
Couldn't you drop the lanyard hole and do a small wire clip mount? I can't see a good solution that offers both options on the same little FRN handle.
So many knives, so few pockets... :)
