Looking for SpydieChef feedback

#1

Post by M Sea »

Hope everyone is having a great Christmas break. I am giving a hard look at the SpydieChef as my next knife purchase and wanted to know who has one and how they like/dis-like it, especially in the kitchen. I am looking to use it exclusively in the Kitchen. I already have a Caribbean PE and may just use that? Thanks.

It would be fantastic if it wasn't so small. It's too small for my tastes in the kitchen.

Thank you, a buddy down here said the exact same thing.

I think its an amazing design. One of my favorites.

But thats my opinion of it as an edc.

Buy one for edc, ignore all that stuff about using it in the kitchen.

Gotcha, I was thinking kitchen only. Probably stick with the Caribbean for edc.

I don´t have a Spydie Chef, but what I´d consider:

- The extremely positive blade angle (for a Spydie): Very good for cutting on a board, but otherwise not what I´d personally want in a folder (but that´s just me)
- Solely for kitchen use: Rather short edge and thick blade.
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

Wouldn't sell the SpydieChef short as an EDC. Depends upon what you do. If your uses lean towards hard usage, then the Caribbean is the better choice, otherwise, the SpydieChef might surprise you. May take a bit of getting accustom to what it has to offer, but for many of us it's like discovering a new friend. Please regrind to 15 degrees or slightly under. :)

That makes sense. I liked the blade angle but for now will hold off on it. Maybe look into something with more of a kitchen specific design.

Thanks, probably gonna stick with the Caribbean for now. For me at least, its been a rock solid edc. Just love it👍

Really like mine. Carried it a lot for use but do use it for food prep. Very nice on meat. More challenging with bigger vegetables like onions and tomatoes.

What about that green Pacific Salt thing? Doesn't that have a longer blade in the same metal?
(That said, the main reason dedicated kitchen knives tend not to be folders is cleanliness - any folding knife is going to accumulate gunge around the pivot, no matter how thoroughly washed. I admit it's fun to chop onions with a folder, though.)

The green Pac Salt couldn’t really do much that my Caribbean can’t but I am sure its a stellar knife. Love that color. I have a black one or I would be all over that.

Yes I realised just after posting that your Caribbean is going to have just as much blade as the Pacific... and the Caribbean is probably overall a nicer knife!
I have been trying to decide which one of these to get for a while - having concluded the Spydiechef is probably too posh for me.

Get some Z-Cuts and save yourself A TON of money for something else. That's an awful lot of money to spend on a folder used just for the kitchen, which in my opinion is a big waste of a money. A folder in the kitchen is like oil and water to me. I really don't get the point of doing so.

I’d say the Spydiechef is a good EDC, especially if you tend to cut a lot of food/fruit on the go, but it is no kitchen knife. It is too short and thick behind the edge to compete.

It dulls noticeably quicker than S30V in my general uses, but it is ridiculously easy to sharpen again.

I carry mine quite a lot.

The SpydieChef packs a ton of edge length into its design though. You dont realize it until you start comparing it with other knives.

Yes the pac salt/ endura has a longer blade but the edge length is almost the same.
0.1 inch difference.
