2021 New Years Knife Resolutions?
2021 New Years Knife Resolutions?
I never do resolutions but I think this year mine is going to be to actually try to rotate through my knives and use more than 2-3 of them all year :o
And I'm starting early with this fella.

Re: 2021 New Years Knife Resolutions?
I was considering doing some kind of "one model only for at least two weeks" challenge to myself. But I know I won't be able to do it. :p Still, I may try something like that.

Re: 2021 New Years Knife Resolutions?
maybe mine will be to not buy any next year. that'll be really hard to do though if this ayoob model comes out, or a dlc cruwear purple g10 manix 2, or a dlc cruwear purple g10 yojimbo 2, or a rockjumper in anything besides vg10, or a blacked out caribbean, or...

Yes this year I resolve to use the knives I have instead of buying new ones.....
Ya... that'll happen.

Re: 2021 New Years Knife Resolutions?
Mine is just to really research the knives I decide to nab. I’m reeeeeeal tired of selling knives after I buy them...
That starts with the smallfly and the maple chap, then probably a lot of kitchen knives :D

Make one.
Re: 2021 New Years Knife Resolutions?
I’m going to try and use the Caribbean exclusively for a year. If Shaun Houston’s knife comes out this year I might make exceptions.
Was never a space cadet, but with LC200N I might be more in space than a cadet.

Re: 2021 New Years Knife Resolutions?
I am on my third one-knife-for-a-month and it is not hard. I did a hollow grind and ffg folders and now a fixed convex. I get to know the knife more by trying to bring the most out of it. At the same time I am also learning and adapt to a new knife each month. Never stuck with a grail.
It is fun to pick the next "One" each month, but not every knife in the collection is suitable, of course.

i approve of this message. maybe i should try to finish the one i started making years ago...
it's based on an izula, but i added a thumb rest on the spine and was going to give it a scandi grind (although i'd probably rather go with a flat or high saber grind now). i cut it from a blank of o1 tool steel.

Re: 2021 New Years Knife Resolutions?
I will try to sell almost a dozen of my old, unused, lesser quality knives and buy no more than five or six new ones.

Re: 2021 New Years Knife Resolutions?
This is a most interesting question in regards to a well thought out "New Year's Knife Resolutions". Because at first when I heard the Good News of the Sprint Run of the C-60 Ayoob I had determined I was going to get 4 of them ( 2 serrated & 2 plain edged). But now I'm finding it necessary to maybe get 6 of them ( 3 of each edge type). Because as quick as the C-60 Ayoob model always disappears from dealer's shelves each time it's released or issued in a Sprint Run it might end up on the "Endangered Species List" of great folders :cool: .
I'm also considering adding more fixed blades to my "user rotation" as well. :cool:
And I also think most people should implement more Hawkbill blades in their "user arsenal for a well balanced life :cool:

Re: 2021 New Years Knife Resolutions?
No more than 6 in total ... maybe. Would prefer it to be a no growth year for the collection ... ie buy one, sell one.
But really, I think I'm starting to peter out on amassing knives. For 2020, I purchased 36; parted with 20. There was a lot of shuffling of the collection but found it necessary to do so as I have way too many on hand.
I'll likely continue to weed out in 2021. Decided if I am not using them, I should probably let them go.
No longer collecting knives that are cool and popular, will only collect those I prefer most and something I'm curious to try. Likely done collecting kitchen cutlery, 4 sets is enough. Likely done with locks other than back & compression. Done collecting Shaman, Native, Lil Native, Manix, uniques & Wows (such as Bombshell & Magnitude).
Will continue to collect D4, PM2, Chaparral, and assorted fixed blade; hopefully at a slower rate.

So many knives - so little funds!!!
Re: 2021 New Years Knife Resolutions?
I’m having a new mite in the first three months of ‘21. I will have to buy a lot less holed loot this coming year. I think I’ll focus on ladybugs and maybe even try to find a mosquito or make one.

You should finish that up then share your results!ladybug93 wrote: ↑Sat Dec 19, 2020 5:23 pmi approve of this message. maybe i should try to finish the one i started making years ago...

I'm planning to gradually learn more steps of the process then eventually complete my own from scratch design. Next on my list is order a blank to practice making and installing scales.

Re: 2021 New Years Knife Resolutions?
Buy less knives and appreciate what I have some more. I want to get a nice patina on my K390 Endura from use.
Re: 2021 New Years Knife Resolutions?
My resolution is gonna be to only own knives that I have purposes for. For example, Caribbean for beach/boating, Manix 2 XL for camping, Sliverax for daily carry, WE Minitor for classy affairs :cool:

Re: 2021 New Years Knife Resolutions?
I’m going to be transitioning out of manual labor and into real estate this year, so I’m keen to start collecting/using more gentleman’s style EDC including blades. Additionally, I want to sharpen up on my sharpening and edge refinement so that no matter what I have in my pocket I have a razor sharp blade.
Re: 2021 New Years Knife Resolutions?
Use the knives I have or get rid of them;
No new knives with bearings;
No flippers;
No new knives that speak languages I don’t. I speak English, Afrikaans (for the local customs that I might like) and have about 500 words of Japanese so I think I might manage.

Re: 2021 New Years Knife Resolutions?
The big mental shift for me came this year. I'm still quite new at this, and as such I've probably let others (IKC) influence my choices and not so much analyzing my own needs.cycleguy wrote: ↑Sun Dec 20, 2020 10:40 amNo more than 6 in total ... maybe. After that revelation, my acquisitions have been much more user oriented and much less fancy pants knives.
Now, buying only knives that I could actually need is a great start, but there is still a disparity between the number of incoming and outbound knives. A logical next step would be to balance out those numbers and preferably go slightly negative, at least for a while.
It's not going to be easy. There are still knives I wan't to try, and once in a while I learn new stuff that sends me off in a totally new direction (thank you Evil D for adding 3 SE Spyderco's to my collection in just the last quarter of 2020), so there will definitely be some hard prioritizing in the years to come.
