Demko Spyderco?

#1

Post by Doc Dan »

Now that Cold Steel is no more, well, at least not owned by Thompson any longer, I wonder if a Spyderco collaboration with Andrew Demko could happen? He has come up with some nice locks. Of course, I would want a Triad Lock, but he also has others he has invented.

Another thing is that Spyderco will do justice to his talent; far better than Cold Steel did.

Hi Doc,

Lynn just released a video saying that he and Demko will be working with the new owners to keep Cold Steel as it was.

Thanks! Well, that is perhaps good for him. He is still employed. It might be bad for the rest of us, though, since I guess there is no forthcoming collaboration.

I have a Demko custom AD10 that I've always thought would be really nice with a Spyder hole instead of thumbstuds.

I've never liked a Triad lock. Too much effort to disengage for my tastes. Demko tends to design tanks, I prefer slicers.

I have a few Triad Locks. They are smooooth and easy. When new, they needed to be broken in for a week or two. Afterwards they were great.

Yes, Demko's knives would be much better with a Spydie hole in them. Hey, a Sal Glesser design with a Demko lock would be pretty alright.

As I've come to realize how back locks may fit my knife demands more and more, I'd definitely entertain a Tri-Ad lock on a Spyderco but 1) they'd absolutely have to make the function smoother and more fluid, and 2) it would have to find a sweet spot between the whole tank and slicer thing. A bomb proof lock isn't necessarily enough to make a great knife, which (putting it as politely as I can) is why I don't own any Cold Steel knives. It would take putting their lock in a Spyderco design to win me over, maybe something like a Tri-Ad lock Shaman..

Ya'll need to try the large Voyagers. Simple, light and ergonomic as **** while having excellent slicing geometry.

Demko tends to design beefy knives, and the Voyagers are no exception, but they cut very well.

viewtopic.php?p=1236767 - Reviewed one here a few years ago. Kicked the Manix XL out of my pocket for a while. Ended up selling it to a coworker who needed an EDC.

Gotta have my thumb hole. I just can't go back to thumb studs or else I'd own a Sebenza by now too.

i have a voyager tanto xl because if you're going to get a tanto, get a tanto. it's awesome. just watch your fingers when closing it. i also have the clip point recon one xl. they're both great, but i think i prefer the tanto just slightly. the 4 max scout is also a good option for a large beefy knife at a good price. and the tuff lite is the best beefy utility knife with a super solid lockup. they also have the finn wolf which is a great folder if you're into bushcrafting at all.
keep your knife sharp and your focus sharper.

I agree with you on the tanto, and I feel like everybody should have one because why not? I chose the recon 1 in S35VN and it is very smooth with incredible lockup. Triad locks are not the crude rough things that people assume they are.

That said, my P4 LW has probably the smoothest action of any lockback I own. It drops shut and flicks out with an almost Balisong like roll of the wrist and has no blade wiggle either.

you could always remove the stud and drill your own hole.

My Demko AD10 has .190 bladestock yet is hollow ground to .015 behind the edge. It is quite an effective slicer given its 8.7oz robustness ;)

Many other Cold Steels are good cutters: Code 4, Voyager (as mentioned by Vivi), AD10, Recon 1 (especially the hollow ground CTS-XHP variants same being true for American Lawman), Broken Skull (for those Endura fans) etc...

Sorry, but a nearly 5 mm thick blade is no slicer compared to most spydies.

Sal,

You may have a chance at Demko before too long, you just never know. :D

I just got that feeling.

Unless he has a contract, could be, dunno.

Why settle for Triad locks?

A Scorpion Lock Spydie would be an amazing, burly knife. Built like a tank and much more easier to clean after a hard day's work. Make it a Taichung special, with Titanium scales and all. (drool...)
