I'm surprised at all the ZDP getting the axe. There are so few premium steel options coming from Seki as it is compared to Taichung and Golden...

K390 is replacing it.

None of these surprise me at all.
I had intentionally avoided the speculative thread to save myself worry. Glad I did.
Sad to see 4 fixed blades go, but that’s the way things are. :( I wish there was more general interest in Spyderco’s fixed knives.
I have enough enthusiasm for them to cover a thousand people’s budgets. ;) :D

Are the discounts the same across the board of dealers/distributors, or do some dealers have deeper discounts than others?

Despite $50 discounts on the Bowie (BHQ), prices are still pretty steep considering that we had Advocates that sold for -$200 before...

That's like discontinuing S110V knives in favor of Maxamet. Sure, they both hold an edge forever, but they're very different otherwise - in particular, stain resistance.

ZDP is the king of fine edge retention, and sharpens nicely on Japanese waterstones - also sad seeing a Japan exclusive steel go, I hope that srs13 comes along soon. Seems like everyone moved away from Seki City (sog/cold steel/al mar), and losing unique Japanese scales makes this hurt more

I look at it more like, there is only room for one regular production "premium" steels per model.

Also, I bet ZDP sales were fairly stagnant. This will churn up some extra sales.

Discontinued doesn't guarantee a discount. Inventory has to be high. That's not always the case.

AFAIR, that's the first disco list in the last 4 years that won't hurt my wallet. Well, I promised my wife to not buy any knives for the rest of 2020 anyway.

I had hoped for the Tropen to be discounted, to make it a real bargain. Oh well...

I really like the Tusk but I feel it’s hung on way too long. It’s had to roll along with the yearly price increases now to the point I don’t even feel it’s a value at a discounted price now. It’s $280 and discounted to $250. You can get a premium knife for 250 vs the tusk. Still a cool knife though.

I get it, but It’s a bummer. The British Racing Green scales were classy. I don’t know as much about K390, but the blue scales don’t do it for me

Short list. Spyderco is making products that people want!

I need to nab some of those t shirts while I still can!
My thought exactly, just ordered one I've been looking at for over a year.

That does really stink to see the mountain shirt go, that’s probably my all time favorite design, colors are great too. I may have to order one or two to have as backups while I still can. I would still love that design to be made into a hook-backed patch I can put on my backpack.

Does that complexity decrease the simplicity? Not at all.

Truly sad about the loss of ZDP-189. A great balanced steel with ridiculous edge holding.

At least we get to keep K390.
It does not appear to be completely discontinued. The endura and stretch remain.

The Bradley Bowie is tempting now. I figured K390 would kill off the ZDP-189.
It's purely hype, in just about every practical sense ZDP-189 is more useful. It resists corrosion more, it sharpens on a wider array of abrasives, and it is still massively wear resistant.

That's not true.

K390 has way more edge stability. It's also easy to sharpen and I'll bet it holds its edge longer than ZDP.

What experience do you have with K390?

I'll definitely be picking up some more ZDP dragonflies.
