How do you pronounce "Caribbean"?
It's raining outside, the Caribbean is in my pocket, and I've got a long monotonous job ahead of me. Don't blame me for being bored. :D
How do you pronounce the word "Caribbean"? Accent on the second or third syllable?

Accent on the second syllable for me. Accent on the third syllable feels less natural and more clumsy to me.
Re: How do you pronounce "Caribbean"?
I lived in Florida for a while and I heard it pronounced both ways. I guess it depends on what group of people you talk to. I always pronounced it "Ca RIB Be an" but I've got a lot of friends in Florida that pronounce it the other way.
Take the word Laboratory for instance. A good British friend of mine who lived here in Blue Springs, MO where I live always pronounced it "La Bor a Tory". And him and I would argue in a friendly way which was right. Its one of those cases where you could say both are right.

Re: How do you pronounce "Caribbean"?
Depends on the rhythm of the sentence.
So for instance:
Spyderco CaRIBbean
Pirates of the CaribBEan
So for instance:

Re: How do you pronounce "Caribbean"?
Interesting. For me, I would still have the accent on the second syllable in both of your examples, but I can see how sentence structure and rhythm could make a difference in which pronunciation sounds more "right".dj moonbat wrote: ↑Tue Oct 27, 2020 8:43 amDepends on the rhythm of the sentence.

Kind of like "thee" and thuh" depending on the word it precedes.

I'm another that says CaRIBean in every case except when refering to Pirates, in which case its always Pirates of the CariBEan. I don't know if thats social programming or what, but Pirates of the CaRIBean just sounds wrong and conjures images of Jack Sparrow in a straw hat drinking a margherita under an umbrella on the beach.

What happened to care-uh-bee-un
Re: How do you pronounce "Caribbean"?
I believe Larry is right. When we were in the Caribbean, , we asked that question many times and the answer was always BE. The people that inhabited the islands ( cannibals) were the "Caribs" . Carib-bean.

Ha, tough one but I have lived in the Florida Keys since the 90’s and get over to the Bahamas often, lived on Man O’ War cay for two years. The most popular pronunciation down here is the first choice in the poll, ca-RIB-be-an. I hear it both ways but the majority of the time its ca-RIB-be-an. 🏝

Got to say, I'm a little jealous of all your beautiful beach photos M Sea! My wife and I lived on one of the Bahamian islands (Andros) for a few months back in 2016. Would love to go back someday.M Sea wrote: ↑Tue Oct 27, 2020 10:01 amHa, tough one but I have lived in the Florida Keys since the 90’s and get over to the Bahamas often, lived on Man O’ War cay for two years. Re: How do you pronounce "Caribbean"?
So are the pronunciation differences more akin to tomato/to-mah-to, or like nuclear/“nu-cue-ler”?

Re: How do you pronounce "Caribbean"?
Tomato vs tomahto may be a valid discussion, but "nu-cue-ler" is flat wrong. :p

Re: How do you pronounce "Caribbean"?
I prefer CaRIBbean. It seems to better fit the beauty of the area.
Re: How do you pronounce "Caribbean"?
Both ways, depending on how it fits with the sentence
