Bob Lum All Rounder ... a Spyderco version?

#1

Post by PSquared »

I didn’t want to derail Mr Blonde’s thread on that rare Chinese but the enthusiasm for Mr Lum’s designs is apparent.

What would be the possibility of an All Rounder being made by Spyderco? Benchmade had a version they called the Dejavoo, full size and “mini” (3.25 in blade), that have been discontinued for quite a few years now.

Both companies made versions of the Tanto folder so maybe it’s possible that Spyderco could make an All Rounder as well?

I also liked the idea of a RIL (frame lock) Chinese and Tanto .... Mr Lum, to my knowledge, made both with frame locks as well.

Edited to add an image :

It's a good idea, but since BM already made it, I doubt Spyderco will touch it, but maybe with a different lock? I'm guessing they would need to work out something with the Estate as well.

Hi PSquared,

Bob Lum had offered the model to us while we met with him in Eugene. I told him that we'd prefer to mod the model a bit to make it easier to open. He declined so we declined and then Bob offered to Benchamde.

Hi Julia,

Anything is possible, but at this time, there is nothing planned.

Sal,
How do you know when re-release a model? The voices here aren't exactly indicative of the general knife-buying public (and I mean that in the best possible way).

I agree wholeheartedly. Sal, is there any chance we will see a run of the Lum Tanto someday?

Please and thank you.

We ran into a lot of problems with the Lum folding Tanto and we'll not likely do that again.

Thanks for the reply Sal, not great news but always really fascinating to hear the background story.

A Ti Chinese RIL would be a great second prize. In fact I’d be happy with a new Almite Walker liner lock version, something Spyderco hasn’t done in a while.

That's a real teeth kicker. What were the issues with the Tanto? It seems fairly straight forward, aside from the grind.

Benchmade also had a "DejaVoo" model that Bob Lum designed for them that I kind of liked. Now if enough people wanted something like this it's hard to say whether or not Spyderco could do a design that Benchmade might have legal priority with.

Actually the older LUM Chinese looks so close to this design I would be more tempted to shoot for a Sprint Run of it rather than this "All Rounder" model.

My favorite of all the Lum models are the two Tanto models that Spyderco did>> the C-46 Tanto Folder and the Fixed blade.

By the way how long has Bob Lum been deceased now? I think I remember around 2008 but I could be wrong?

Yes. The one I had was very well built and finished. I imagine that kind of quality build and materials will be expensive to make. One could lose money quickly on a run of those if things went wrong but that is probably true with most models. I wish I kept mine and would probably buy another one to keep this time if I had the opportunity to get one without paying mark up prices.
