Any interest in a Spyderco utility knife (box cutter)

Anyone else interested in a Spyderco utility knife with replaceable blades? I would buy one in a heartbeat. I'm a carpenter and a lot of of the time use a box cutter for different tasks and would love to be using a Spyderco. How about it Sal? Say yes and I'll be your first and second customer (will buy one for my brother too)

it would be cool if they came up with a nice, ergonomic design with frn and their texturing. i'm pretty happy with my current utility knife though and it was much cheaper than anything spyderco makes in frn, so it would probably not do it for me unless they could get the cost down or make a completely breakthrough design.

I'm talking about a nice titanium folding type knife that I can put utility blades in. I have tons of Spyderco knives but have to look for opportunities to use them because I'm constantly using my utility knives.

Not for me personally, as the Spydie ‘utility knives’ I have already offer superior performance for my work needs.

Have you tried the Wharncliffe Dragonfly or Delica? I can imagine they’d work very well in carpentry type work. :)

I’ve used utility knives a lot in the past, but I find those knives have superseded them. Well not the Wharny DF2, as I don’t have one yet - I’m hoping for a K390 one - but the other DF2s and the HAP40 Jazzlica is what I use often at work.

Would buy. I am also a carpenter and have wanted a Spydie utility knife too!. Maybe use the Native LW or Manix LW chassis? Shaman maybe too heavy, bulky and expensive... Maybe with the new LW spin-off Sal has mentioned?

Or something with spare blade storage?

Seems like it might be hard to make viable from a business perspective, but it would/ could/ will be darn cool! :spyder:

I use my utility knives a lot for cutting trim coil metal and things that wear down the tip or break the tip so I like using something that I can replace. I carry a Military most days and do like the wharncliffe style blades as well.

I find that I have enough regular need to do "destructive cutting"-- to cut other materials against concrete, ceramic, and metal that I use disposable blades quite often. This is why I find this idea appealing.

For other uses, like in warehouses, i agree with you. :D

I am also sure to use my Spydies when I can. :spyder:

I feel like the entire point of utility knives with replaceable blades is to be cheap. Im not sure a more expensive version has a place in the marketplace.

I always liked those super cheap box cutters that were just a slide inside a sleeve.

I’d be interested but I doubt I’d actually use it. My native lc200n/g-10 and my k390 ladybug pretty much cover all the everyday dumb stuff I do with my knives.

But ya know. Sure. The more of my cutting tools are made by Spyderco the better.

Sure, using those kinds of knives for destructive cutting does make sense.

And you’re right, Enactive - I don’t really do that kind of cutting at work.

What do you think of those tungsten alloy steel blades?

I got this interesting little utility blade holder in a package buy or trade from someone a while ago:

There’s a bit of slop in the ‘lock’, but it’s a nice, simple, featherweight design.

I could see it being a good addition to a first aid kit...

For a right hander, LOL. :D

But yeah, something like an ergonomic Spydie handle which took existing blades would be a useful work tool for a lot of people, I guess. :spyder: :)

That's a nice little compact utility blade! Too bad it isn't lefty friendly.

I've been using serrated and plain steel utility blades mostly lately. I do have some carbide coated steel blades to try-- gotta remember to pull them out. Thanks!

I do find myself using my Spydies at work variously, some days a lot, others not so much. I do use the utility blades most days. A one hand operating, clipped Spydie folding utility blade holder could be quite cool. As i mentioned and others have too-- not sure the price point required is viable in the market. I would buy one or two, but i am not representative, nor 'normal.' Pretty sure not so many around here are-- at least regarding cutlery  :p :D

IMO, this isn't the niche Spyderco does their best work in--all the good utility blade holders I've seen are either too cheap/easily copied for Spyderco to really make a dent in the market, or they're way over the top in terms of materials/finishing details, which means Spyderco would have to charge insane prices.

If someone in the Spyderco R&D crew comes up with a design that's better than either the Olfa 34b or Stanley 199, sure I'm interested. But those are nearly perfect and cost less than $10. It's like asking Spyderco to make a better pair of scissors--they could probably come up with something interesting, but likely not something that would change the way people think about the product category.

The RUK (Both Rexford's and the other one with the same name) and TPT designs appear to be big success stories, but when you've already got Kickstarter and Aliexpress flooded with imitators it seems like a pretty risky product to sink actual R&D resources into. For Gerber and Civivi it makes sense to come out with cheap clones, Spyderco not so much. Think about the SpydeRench and Bryrd Harp. (I really wanted the SpydeRench to be amazing, but I always go back to a Leatherman because they're just better pliers.)

I picked this up on a whim, don't know if I would have paid for it, but it was free with points. I don't know that it is entirely ergonomic, based on the tool on the end. I haven't cut enough with it yet to be sure. But it shows there is a potential to play with the design of the common box cutter for sure. I would be interested in a Spyderco design.

Or even better, something with a really good blade and a disposable

Actually I think Spyderco already has a model that can be used as a utility knife. The Dodo model I've used to open boxes and do other chores that were mostly done with utility knives.

A workman's version of the Dodo model I do believe could be a great utility knife. Minus the replaceable blades.

From Spyderco's standpoint I doubt we ever see it happen. First off the market is already saturated with a huge selection of box knives and/or utility knives. There are probably at least 6 companies now as we speak that already offer such a tool and I doubt if Spyderco could profit in that market that has already been flooded with a wide range of utility knives.

But I would buy a workman's version of the Dodo in a heartbeat.

A counter to the argument about making something that the market is already flooded with.

I would argue the market is way more flooded with mid to high end knives and yet they do okay.

Find a way to make a great knife with a replaceable blade, and a high quality permanent blade, make it ergonomic, and I would be in.

Start with a byrd version, and then go full spyderco when that takes off, if the waters need to be tested first.

I will look for excuses to use my premium knives, but I am not cutting linoleum with them, and numerous other no-no's.
Throw one of these in it, and tell me that it doesn't fill a niche

obviously the benefit would be spyderco ergonomics for extended use. Maybe use the Shaman handles as a platform? So many box cutters are hot spot central....

I have seen a few custom knife makers make fancy box cutters. Maybe there is enough demand for Spyderco to try.

I would not be a buyer myself. I like them cheap and disposable.

The reality is that a $10 knife would work for most people but people still pay $100-$500 for a kni that does basically the same thing. I have probably 30 spyderco knives but I still have to look for opportunities to use my knife at work because I'm cutting into metal or against concrete etc. and I would gladly pay a premium for Spyderco knife with replaceable utility blades that I could use daily without worrying about ruining the blade. My edc is a Ti Military but I'm not going to use it to cut rope against a piece of concrete block where as if the blade was replaceable I would in a heart beat.

I’ve been using the Milwaukee Fastback for about 10 years now, and it’s awesome and super fidgety! I don’t think Spyderco could make one any cheaper with the same features.

Wire clip
Push button lock
Instant blade changes
Great ergos
