3/4 of 2020 are almost passed...

Post by archangel »

... and I have only added 4 Spydies to my collection so far. Ikuchi and Hanan arrived back in February, and between then and now just two more - my first two Spydie kitchen knives, a Counter Puppy and a Utility Knife 4.5". They are great cutting tools, but... No new pocketable/playable Spydies since February..... :(

I have saved up to be able to buy 2 rather higher priced Spydies. The plan was to get the Z-Wear Shaman (if I get a chance), but I am starting to be frustrated that it does not show up week after week. Have even thought about ordering the nice blue titanium scaled KnifeJoy Spydiechef instead, to finally fill the LC200N spot, since I am worried that an Autonomy (which was my designated LC200N knife) would not pass customs, and titanium is MY preferred scales material. Spydie number 2 might be either the SpyOpera, or a surprise knife from upcoming discontinued season. I want to place an order, get a really nice new gemstone, and soon! Sal, when will we finally see the Shaman Z-Wear??

What's on your list for the remains of 2020? Do you reserve some cash for surprise or predicted discontinued Spydies?

2020 saw the "return of the Manix 2 LW" for me... had one some time ago for a year or so, liked it a lot, but still sold it eventually. And, while I was glad having experienced that great design, I also was sure that I would not get another Manix 2 anymore

Well, far from it!
- The only Spydies I bought in 2020 so far: Manix 2 LW in BD1N and Manix 2 LW in REX 45 (should arrive soon! :) )

What I WILL certainly get immediately as soon as it comes out (and I am sure it will still be in 2020): Pac Salt ffg SE (in LC200N)!

And probably the Rock Jumper SE, but perhaps that one will have to wait till 2021, depending on my financial situation.

Then there is the Siren.. Really like that design, but I am still hoping for an SE version (and maybe in FRN?!)
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

So far in 2020:
Lil'Native Rex 45, Salt 2, Manbug Salt, Waterway and Siren

Candidates for the remaining 1/4:
Pac salt FFG SE LC200N (decision made, just awaiting availability)
Native 5 CF/S90V (still on the fence, quite expensive for what I consider a marginal use case)

Pretty big Spyderco year for me. If I get the Pac salt before end of year it will be a net doubling of my Spyderco "collection".
The Native 5 will be at the expense of my Native salt, so it will not effect the net sum.

So, I guess we can all agree 2020 has been a crazy year

Yes and I like it! It is my first dagger style knife so I have to give it some time and let the newness wear off; but I'm thinking I'll be keeping it for a long long time.

I did not know that it was out. ????

Yep, I see that it is and it's on my list. I need one or two of them. They are of a legal length and design for me so it is important that I snag them.

I'm fighting the growing urge to buy one right now. The more I'm here the more I'm liking the discontinued models. Unfortunately, my budget doesn't necessarily like them as much as I do :)

Awesome. I watched KeithKevinKen's video on it a few days ago, and it looks so sexy. I've never had a dagger-style knife, either. I'm waiting to see what's on the disco'd list first, but this could be a 2020 purchase.

I usually like to use a new knife model for a while to get to know it, so I don’t tend to buy new knives unless they offer something substantially different or potentially better than the tools I have already.

I missed out on the REX45 Li’l Natives - not through want of trying.

I obtained a couple of older models this year - the 52100 CE PM2 and the Southfork and love using both of them.

I finally got a Goldenstone at JD’s suggestion and have also been enjoying playing with that.

The K390 Dragonfly and Stretch 2 were my ‘must have’ anticipated models for 2020. I just received the DF2 and have been using it for about a week - it’s a superb utility knife, as expected.

Every year, Spyderco come up with some surprises that persuade me to consider a model I hadn’t previously considered.

The CBN stone will be a definite addition to my sharpening tools.

The S90V Chief will be a ‘maybe’.

Pattadese is a ‘maybe’ - only due to the righty liner lock, otherwise it would be a definite.

I’ll try for a REX45 Chief, I think.

And the LC200N SE Pac Salt is a welcome surprise, that I’m excited about and keen to try out.

My most anticipated knife of the year has been Watu, bought it as soon as it was out. Found it so good that I immediately broke my 'no duplicates' rule. Also got a SPY27 Para3 so I can play with the steel.

Definitely must buys for the rest of 2020 are the S90V Native Chief and from the new reveal the Pacific Salt (in both SE and PE) and possibly the SmallFly.

The Watu really "speaks to me" more and more: So much to like here: Cutting edge length and weight of a Manix 2 LW, but in a much more compact package; The reasonably thin, 2.5mm Delica blade stock; seemingly very spacious handle (for the overall size) with the option to place the hand very close to the actual edge...

Just a bit pricey especially here in Europe, and I wish they would have kept the frame lock (or make it a linerlock) of the Chokwe.

I bought a second hand C36 a few months ago, and the Rex 45 Shaman instead of waiting for the Rex 45 Chief, which I'll pass on for now since I want different steels. I'm saving up knife funds for the P4LW in K390, and that'll probably be it for a while.
