Newbie with question

#1

Post by behindyou »

I have recently joined the Spyderco fan club by receiving a Matriarch 2 as a gift. I then bought a Tenacious as a EDC. While I love the Matriarch form and function, I appreciate the heft of the Tenacious. My question is, on days when I have to wear a suit, which knife is recommended for pocket carry? I thought about the Dragonfly (if I can remove the clip), or Cat, Chicago, and Manbug. Any help would be appreciated.

Knife center exclusive Dragonfly in Hap 40, I guess I would be tempted to carry if I was inclined to carry a knife when wearing a suit.

The Chaparrals are quite gentlemanly as well.

Hi Behindyou,

Welcome to our forum.

When wearing suit, in my opinion, lighter is more important than size. Decide what size you want to carry, then look for the lightest model in that size.

I'll 2nd this about the KC Dfly. It's always my Sunday suit carry. Welcome to the forum!

If a nicer small knife is what you're after, I'd echo the ideas above: the Knife Center pakkawood Dragonfly or any of the Chaparral knives. If you'd like something less expensive, the newly released Astute is excellent!

Welcome to the forum! :)

If you ask me: Chaparral, no doubt. The FRN model looks rather classy already, but there are several even more "pretty" versions available.

Plus: With the Chap you'll generally own one of the very best performing when it comes to pure cutting and best designed small folders ever imho...
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

My suit carry knife is a Spyderco spin with the clip removed, carried deep in my rear pocket. Sits very flat and stays out of the way, but its a capable little blade.

I'll second what some of the others have said....Dragonfly or Chaparral. I also have a Nishijin Cricket that I'll stick in my pocket when I don't want a clip showing

If you're willing to wait, that new Chaparral in birdseye maple that was announced in Reveal 6 would be the perfect suit carry, I think!

Are you ok with clipping the knife in your pocket or does it need to be carried loose in your pocket?

I would recommend any of the Kiwis, Kopas, Ouroboros, Sliverax, Bradley Air, Centofante Membery, Centofante 3/4, Caly 3, Chaparral...I could probably list more but you can't go wrong with any of those. The Kiwis/Kopas are especially nice but also out of production so you'll have to search for those. I have an Ouroboros with polished handle scales that's my current dress/special occasion knife.

The correct answer is the Urban or the UKPK. Light, slender, and unthreatening to the types of people one is likely to be around in a suit.

Hard to argue with David's logic, I prefer to carry a Caly, Kopa, Kiwi or Horn folder when in a suit. That said, I have clipped a Millie to my inner sport coat pocket when I thought I would want something with more reach. I don't wear as many dressy knives as I once did, but still the upcoming Chap in Birdseye maple would be a classy choice for any ensemble.

I appreciate this sentiment.

As a sometimes formal gentleman myself, I must admit that Pattadese in Reveal 6 would also be a beauty for an inside suit-coat pocket carry. Might be a tad heavy at 2.7 ounces, probably doable. I prefer something in the 2 ounce range, but a really sleek profile on that one. Definitely looks like an imported gentlemanly carry.

I don't wear a suit much these days, or go into my office, but the last time I wore a full suit and tie I carried my Paramilitary 2 clipped in my pants pocket.

You'll find a lot of discussions about what knife to carry with a suit, usually called what "gentleman's" knife to carry. Most of them a small knives without clips. I don't carry small knives and I always use pocket clips. The PM2 is thin and light, and has a clip, so that is what I carry.
