It's literally the name Sal. Beyond that he probably just designed it like everything else?

The logo is Sal's makers mark. It's on most of his designs

It wasn’t on the Seki line until recently. I believe the intent is eventually to have it on all of his designs (of which there are many!).

Yes, true. The Cruwear Delica got it first and I was happy to get one

Hi Kloeshuman,

We have been putting "makers marks" on all of the collaboration designs that we'd been making since the late '80's. Eric and I were thinking that we should put our "makers mark" on our designs. It took quite a while to make that decision. Our attitude has always been, "Man who beat on own chest knock self over backwards". Which is why it took so long, but in the end, we decided that "Giving credit where credit is due" is also Something Spyderco does. I designed my "tag", which says sal. Eric designed his, which is EG. Both "tags" are registered trademarks.

We've only added them recently so it will take a while to get them on the older designs.

Back in the days of yore... craftsmen had their own mark that they would place on items they created. It was like a painter signing a painting. It was a symbol of the craftsman's pride in his workmanship. One of the last tasks of a machinist's apprentice would be to make a stamp that he would be his, for the rest of his career. On some of of my antique engines, the same stamp might be found on a multitude of parts: cam lobes, gears, crankshafts. Sometimes, modern collectors might compare notes and discover the same man made the parts for several engines. Sometimes a part might possess several stamps, indicating that it had been repaired over the years.

I for one am glad to see Mr. Glesser's and Mr. Glesser's marks on their knives. Prior to the all out effort it was kind of like The Mona Lisa without Leonardo da Vinci's signature line. Incompleta!
