My collection is mostly spyderco. But not totally intentionally. I just buy for particular roles and spyderco happens to fill most of them.
Lightly insane.

Current spydie collection: Watu, Rhino, UKPK Salt G10 bladeswap, Yojimbo 2 Smooth G10 Cru-Wear, Manix lw “mystic” 20cv, SmallFly 2, Waterway, Ladybug k390, Caribbean
Current favorite steels: sg2/R2, lc200n/Z-FiNit, 3v

I have a SAK Hiker, SAK Classic SD, Condor Bushcraft Basic, Leatherman Surge, Gerber Suspension, SOG Powerlock, 2 Moras, and that's it for my non-Spyderco knives. Each has a role and aside from the fixed-blades, I can't get the same tools from Spyderco, but if I could, I would. I've tried every major brand and some less common ones, but the only company that doesn't leave me wanting, is Spyderco. I could go on for a while about why that is, but I'll just say this: I've found my "forever" brand.

Every folder I own is a Spyderco, except the SAKs obviously. Once the Mule Team project is officially back, I will add a few to my collection of tools, and they might just replace my other fixed-blades. If the MT knives are as efficient and useful as Spyderco's folders, my wallet is in for a bad time.

I don't. Swiss Army Knives, Victorinox kitchen knives, Opinels, Leathermans, machetes and $50-100 A2 & micarta fixed blades fill certain roles really well for me.

I'm exclusively into Spyderco folders when it comes to single blade stuff aside from an Opinel here and there.

I seem to remember Sal saying he had knives from other manufacturers. Maybe he will chime in and confirm or deny. I myself find no virtue in ignoring all the many other great designs out there. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Vivi's post reminded me about SAKs. I definitely have Victorinox as well, although I really don't carry them for the knife.

Great thread that got me thinking archangel! So I tallied all my knifes tonight. I’m actually shocked. I own 90 knifes! A lot of them are older traditionals I have collected throughout my life though. What’s even more shocking to me is that only 34 of them are Spyderco. That means only roughly 38% of my collection is Spyderco. I originally thought is was more than that this morning. But I couldn’t stop thinking about this thread today. So I had to sit down and count.
Another shocker to me was the ratio of imported Spydies I own vs domestic. 14 from Golden,CO compared to 20 from other countries.

Let's put it this way. If there is a certain type of blade I want and if Spyderco makes it or even something relatively close to it and then YES I buy Spyderco. But there are so many different pieces of hardware in the cutlery arena and it's hardly fair to expect any one company to cover all of those bases.

But even with that said I would still say that 85% to 90% of my knife purchases are from the Great Spyder Factory. Not to mention all of the sharpening equipment I've bought from them over the years. Needless to say Spyderco are at the top of my list.

I've only bought spydercos for a few years now. I have other brands in my kitchen, but my pocket has had a spyderco for two decades, with only a few exceptions.
I make some knives I carry for a while.
I'm not really missing out. I find that if it is worth doing, Spyderco will do it. Patience is key with Spyderco. I think I'm going to be pitching a new knife to them, so I hope they take it seriously, cause it is the knife I would like to be carrying now, and I don't want to see other companies make it. I have to finish the prototype. Ed helped a lot with that, he basically wrote a bible for people trying to follow the word of a good folder.
In terms of materials, Spyderco is at the front of the pack. I like to work with steel, so it is great to have them sort out the functional value of the new materials on the market. I can even try the steel with a quality heat treatment for a relatively-low price.

Overall, great company. Those guys changed how I look at knives. Caly 3 is the only knife anyone really ever needs anyway.

Spyderco offers more of what appeals to me (new and interesting steels, good solid working designs) than pretty much any other company, so most of my knives are Spyderco. But I remain interested and open to other brands.

I'd say I'm about 80% Spyderco. I have a lot of other brands, especially in my fixed blade collection.

I own knives from many knife brands. But as far as purchasing knives, for the past several years, it’s been down to Spyderco, Victorinox and CRK. I got my last CRK nearly 5 years ago (I own 5 of them). I own many SAKs, but I have all the SAKs I want. I always carry the same SAKs; an Executive, and either a Spartan or Pioneer in another pocket, so I don’t need any new ones. Then I carry whichever clip knife I choose (usually a Spyderco).

I rarely buy knives anymore. But last year and the year before, I bought more knives than I normally do, and virtually all of them were Spydercos. There are still a few knives I’m considering buying, and they all happen to be Spydercos. The lone exception was I bought one serrated Victorinox paring knife.

Well, that´s perhaps how I should have put it too in my previous post, and I think many here automatically think "single bladed folder" when thinking "Spyderco"...
So I own (except the one Minirgrip that´s for sale) and buy exclusively Spyderco when it comes to single blade folders and for me main EDC pocket knives.

But I do have fixed blades made by Esee, Boker, Mora, Enzo, White River and of course various leathermen (or is "leathermans" the right plural in this case?) and nowadays "only" two SAKs.

If I lost all of my fixed blades and had to start over again, I´d certainly get some from Spyderco.
But I think I had all of my fixed blades already before I even got into Spyderco. And differently to how it is with folders for whatever reason I am much more "practical" when it comes to fixed blades and much less interested in trying out new designs, when the ones I already have cover every need. And they do, so I won´t get a Spyderco fixed blade anytime soon I guess (but invest the money in Spyderco folders instead :D )
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

I like to buy a few models from various manufacturers that highlight their unique designs. Diversity is important to recognize the best qualities overall.

My recent Spyderco examples:
Para 3 S110v
Manix 2 Maxamet
Shaman black blade SE

I love how well received this thread is, how many of you give feedback. :) And I respect in full if you don't live off Spyderco exclusively. ;)

Cutting tools can be folders, fixed blades, utility knives, multi tools (including SAKs) and scissors. Plus specialty knives, for which there are specialists out there, but which I'd like to ignore here (forgive me).

Many / Most of you say you find what you need in the :spyder: lineup when it comes to folders - maybe except for multi-blade folders. I think there isn't much where Spyderco can improve here, not seriously anyway.

Some say their share of non-Spydies in fixed blades is bigger. Sal (I hope you're here, and care to join the discussion), does this bother you? Does it tickle the need to investigate the reasons, and see if you can come closer to the great folders reception, at least in our community?

Utility knives - yes you can cut things with those. But imho they are missing some important genes to be considered a true knife. *I* am not interested in those. Are you? If you own some, would you sell them if Spyderco would decide to offer some (I doubt they will).

An interesting field is the Multi Tool / SAK section. Gosh I'd so love to see the SpydeRench return. But I doubt it will. By my guess it's too complicated to produce (= expensive!) and brought too little revenue. There are true experts out there who offer virtually everything you can ask for. Too difficult to get a bigger foot in the door. Would be cool though... SAKs - well there's the ClipiTool, but is it really a SAK kind of thing? To me, a true SAK must offer more different tools. I for my part can totally live with my Victorinoxes. ;)

Last but not least: scissors or shears. If Spyderco would offer a mid size (bigger and more robust than the ClipiTool), clipable, in any way foldable pair of scissors that are capable of serious textile cutting, as a first responder tool, without any nonsense and thus thinner and lighter than a LM Raptor (there, I said the name), I would buy one for sure. Even two or more, if they were affordable to me. Sal, any chance? What about you guys, would you be interested? I know there are affordable good first responder shears out there. But I'd love them to be real quality products, and foldable & clipable. With a :spyder:. ;)

Keep this thread going! :D

Up until recently I would have answered no. But doing a stocktake I realised for the last 18 months all I have purchased are Spyderco knives.
Before this there were Opinel, Mora, CRKT, the only way I can afford to try a Razel, and SAK.
It seems that I have been bitten by the Spyder.
Although, I took delivery of a Swisstool Spirit this week, I don’t think of this as a knife.

I have more spydercos than anything else by a pretty good margin. I might have more of them than all other brands combined, but I’d have to do a count (but doing that can lead to blasphemous thoughts like “Maybe I own too many knives” or “I shouldn’t buy anymore”). However, I own and regularly use other brands too. Part of my enjoyment of my spydercos is by the contrast of them to other knives. I buy and use what I like and/or what is a good tool for the job. It just so happens that spyderco makes a lot of knives that I like and/or are good tools for the role I want them for.

As was discussed by someone above when it comes to fixed blades the ratio of spydercos to others changes dramatically. I own fixed blades from spyderco but most of my fixed blades are or not. The next two fixed blades I’m likely to buy are not spydercos.

For modern folders it's Spyderco all the way for me. However, I also purchase GEC and SAKs now and again.

It has been a long time since I bought any folder other than Spyderco. I have a like of one specific BM model and I still have one of them left. (I used to have 3.) If I found that model in M4 steel for a price I couldn't resist then that would be one more non-Spyderco I would buy. Otherwise I am buying only Spyderco.

The majority of my knives are Spyderco, but I am fortunate to also have a fair number of non-Spyderco folders and fixed blades (purely for academic reasons, of course). This includes Buck, Schrade, and Gerber, (mostly the older models), Victorinox, Benchmade, Microtech, Case, CRKT, Kershaw, Cold Steel, Emerson, SOG, Chris Reeve, Michael Zieba, Winkler, Zero Tolerance, and a few others I can’t think of off-hand. As Paul mentioned, OTF’s and autos are a lot of fun too. I really like the Microtech Socom, UDT, Ultra-Tech, and Troodon.
