I'm just wondering how each of you got started on Spyderco? My personal experience started about 6yrs ago with knives, but only about July '99 with Spyderco.

I was always just sitting there with cash, and was buying just any knife I liked. I have 35 knives in my current collection, plus a 19" sia and a 2.5' sword. I had just gotten $120 bucks, and headed down to the knife shop.

In the shop I spoke with the owner, quite a nice guy, and spoke about knifes for about 1hr. I looked at about 3/4 of the stock, and the guy had no problems doing this. It ended up with a biker coming in and buying a knife with an (in my words at the time) 'odd hole in the blade'. I had a closer look at it, thinking that "hey, he gets use out of a knife, so do I, why not get the same thing?" and asked about it. After about 20 minutes looking in the catalog I asked about the blade materials(I was still quite new at this, even after 30 knifes), and was told that for my uses to get ATS-55 or Aus-8. I now carry my Delica, and only $80 poorer, but at much higher quality than any other knifes I own.

I only have onw knife that comes anywhere close to spydie quality... a 5" skinning blade, lockblade, Pakistan Steel... my father got it in his teens, sharpened it once, by hand, and it hasn't seen a stone since even though my uncle used it a few times for elk hunting.

Lttle lenghty and a long post, but a good question...

We all start with 10 fingers. Those with Spydies have 9 to spare, Still need a thumb. Good thing I still have 8 to spare...

Hi Wolf,
Like you, I used to buy all kinds of knives... whatever hit my fancy... Used to order years ago from Atlanta Cutlery, when they carried both good and cheap, and I bought both ecpensive, and cheap! :-)
In 1987 I wandered into a shop in Woodstock Vermont and out with a Spyderco Worker. Haven't bought cheap since! Spyderco certainly gives wonderful value for your money. I have about 17 now, along with many other fine knives. Have my eye on several Spydercos at the moment, and one or two from other companies. I have NEVER been disatisfied with any Spyderco. :-)

BTW I still carry the worker now and then...:-)

I'd seen pic & read of Spyderco in'Combat Handguns'magazine.Saw a Delica at a gun show & tried it:SOLD!I first thought the 50/50 edge was a gimmick;now I wonder how I got along without it.Lost that first Spydie, replaced it,bought one for my fishin' buddy-it"grew legs" at his job so I replaced it.My second Delica developed a wobble in the blade(?worn pivot pin?):Spyderco replaced it NQA.I've bought a bunch of the Q-knives for my sons:1'Stars & Stripes'&1'Jolly Roger'"grew legs"(I was able to replace the'Stars & Stripes'but not the'Jolly Roger':gave that son a Merlin to make-up for it.I hope the thieves apprecieate what they have!).I also have a Merlin,& have bought Ladybugs for my sons.
I've carried Buck,Gerber,John Preamble & Case.Sorry guys;Spyderco done laid y'all in the shade!*G*

I went to a Spyderco seconds sale a number of years back. The store was on Old Golden Road and my boss drove by on his way to work and saw all these knives laying out on tables. He wanted a Police model but didn't have any money. He got to work and told me about it. I convinced him to let me leave and I would pick him up one. I got him a Police model and I found an Endura with a black coated blade for myself. A couple of years later a friend talked me out of it and then lost it. I wish I still had that one. Since then I've owned just about every Spydie. Once you have touched that hole you're hooked for life.

Well, about nine years back I was at the Kansas State Fair, I was 11. There just so happened to be a Spyderco display booth with someone sharpening knives, for free of course, with the Spyderco sharpener. I had no knowledge of knives back then, nor did I know anything about Spyderco. It was amazing to see a knife that could slice clean through a peace of paper like a razor. I had never owned anything that sharp, gee I wonder why? I spent 2 or so hours looking at the knives and couldn't believe the prices, $60-150 for a knife that was a fortune!!!! Didn't get one then cause my parents wouldn’t let me have anything like that.
Then, about 2 to 3 years back a friend needed a knife for work and he bought an Endura 50/50. He let me play
around with it, the knife and hole brought back memories. I just had to have one! Just weeks later I scraped together enough money to by the same thing. I was hooked. I now own 7 Spydercos, and hope to own them all some day.

P. S. My parents don’t mind the knives now, they like sharp knives thanks to the 204! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

For quite a few years when I was into hiking and canoeing I can remember seeing these ugly knives with really odd blades in the glass cases of the outdoor stores that I would visit. They were pretty expensive for plastic handled knives and I always wondered about them. When I decided a couple of years ago to get a new knife I found bladeforums and remembered the name. Of course everybody loved these knives and I bought a Wegner, now I am up to seven Spydercos with three on order.

The funny thing is that I bought a Delica, which had to be the knife which I thought was so ugly in the glass case, and after carrying it for a while I find that it looks pretty darn good to me. Beauty is as beauty does.

I hate to be the sensationalist, or speak of such traumatic times, but boys will be boys...

My first spydie experiance was in Junior High - 10 or so years ago. I was quickly pushed up against a secluded locker and found myself eye to blade with a _gigantic_ Endura! (I'll never forget that hole in the blade, or the evil shine the blade took on in the sun.)

Well, I made it out of that situation, no skin off my back. If my plundered backpack didn't count, that is. A few weeks ago I walked into a sporting goods store and saw that same knife gleaming at me through the case... I just had to get something bigger and better. ;-)

Still alive but missing a finger or two. ;-)

It all started back when i was about 10. me and a friend were obsessed with knifes. We carried a knife with us where ever we went. Then one day i saw a knife in the Cabelas catalog so i orderd it. It turned out that it was a defective one so i sent it back in exchange for a Ladybug. I ended up loosing it somewhere out in my backyard and never did find it. after that i went out and bought a FRN Delica, carried it for awhile and lost it. went and bought a Recsue Jr., lost it. By this time i was sold on Spyderco and decided i must have another, So i decided to buy a Dragonfly, I ended up chiping the tip on it and never got around to gettting it re-ground, it enuently ended up getting stolen from out of my truck. So At the time only having my 2nd Delica i spotted a Stainless Steel Delica and thought "I must have". Untill last summer it was just my FRN Delica and my Stainless Steel Delica, untill just a week ago i got busted by the cops and the took it from me. So now here i am Spydercoless and hating every minute of it. Ive resorted to carrying around a cheap multi-tool (america camper?) i found in one of are hunting packs. For now it will hvae to do untill i can talk my parents into pitching on a SpydeRench for every day carry.
And that folks is my Spyderco story

This might be the wrong answer, but I mostly carry Benchmade as my standard. But there are a few nitches that need to be filled in my life, and I turned to Spyderco. One example, my C57P Toad. It fits a nitch that others can't fill for me. I am a big liner lock fan, and that is where I select may carry from first, and design/looks second.

I went in to a dive shop in Concord Mass. about 14 years ago and saw 3 or so stainless steel knives with holes in the blades. I left with a Hunter. I went back about 3 weeks later and picked up a Police. I still carry that Police Model every day on duty. The teeth are slowly disappearing from repeated sharpening. I still have the hunter too... Along with many, many other Spyders. I always have (at least!) one Spyder clipped somewhere!!

Got started when a friend of mine bought me a rescue as a gift. After 6 years of cutting everything imaginable,(seat belts, clothes, car seats, tubing, tape, wire, leather, etc.), it has never let me down. I own two other models, delica and black endura, and at least one of them is always with me.

About 11 years ago, while flipping through the Blade Magazine, I came across an advertisement on Spyderco knives.

Hardly anybody in my country ever heard of this brand of knife. However the shape of the knife caught my interest.

At that time, my interest in knives was smouldering, at best. Anyway, I boldly ordered an Endura.

Kept it in mint condition for about a decade because I thought it was rather special.

In recent years when my interest in knives was rekindled. I found out through friends and magazines that Spyderco had expanded by leaps and bounds.

Now I am back in the arena, so to speak. And what a different world it is compared with a decade ago.

Naturally, I am most impressed with the progress Spyderco had made. I am also amazed at its loyal following throughout the world. Surely, there must be more to all this than that which meets the eye.

As I picked up one or two more models along the way, I continue to learn from knifemakers like Spyderco and the others, about excellence in craftsmanship, passion and a relentless pursuit of excellence.

My first Spyderco was a s/s copilot which I dropped with the blade open chipping 5 mil of the tip.It got replaced by an Mini AFCK for work carry and I sold the copilot to a guy who said "cool , a screwdriver tip,I'll buy that".

I started carrying a endura the day after a horse reared while I was shoeing it The horse pulled a nail that I had driven into its hoof though my chaps and left leg. I could not get my chaps loose to get away from the horse and my pocketknife was in my pocket, and I could not reach it to cut myself free. The endura one hand opening and clip saved me when the same thing happened again at a later time.

Been carrying Spyderco since the early '80s. Bought a ss handle Mariner at a fishing show and fell in love. Understand, this was 82 or 83 and I paid $60 or 70 for the knife, pretty big bucks for a knife then. Never regreted it.
