Found this guy on the side of the road

#1

Post by dmr321 »

Found this one on the side of the road this morning 😯
think theres hope for it?
I wish it wasnt pinned together as the liners are rusted a little as well.
I'm going to try and clean it out with air compressor, and use some scotch bright for the rust..,
any suggestions?

Tbh I have never really looked much at the Centofante but the ergos feel great in hand.

Can I send it in for a spa treatment 😂

Hi Dross,

Welcome to our forum.

You can send it to us, but I don't know how much we can do depending on how deep the pitting goes.

Fingers crossed let’s hope this one is not ROAD KILL. There is something quite appealing to the weathered look you would pay extra if it were a pair of jeans 😁 Good luck

That's quite a find! I would clean it up as best I could and use it!

It might be permanently pitted but you can clean off the rust and sharpen it up and bring it back into the fight. Too bad it's a pinned pivot.

Awesome find. It has definitely lived a wonderful life, unlike some of the other dust collectors we see on here. Hopefully it has an Act 2!

Soak in wd-40 and clean with a cloth. Then rub in places with an eraser.

It's got "character." Besides, the FRN looks great! ;) Rub it with a pre-1982 copper penny. That will remove the red rust; the pitting is permanent, though.

Thanks I'm going to try both of these and get it going again!

yeah it has a lot of sand built up inside of it and was open when I found it, It would be cool to take it apart to clean the liners off but I'll do the best I can

The highway actually, I-95 in central Florida. I have found flea market specials and $20 gerbers different places over the years.., usually fishing, but this was random as can be.

A cooler lid flew out of the back of a friends truck (stupid I know, as it could be a hazard to other drivers) I was following behind and seen it go off into the grass. I stopped to get it, and walked up the edge line of the highway and it was half in the dirt half on the edge of pavement with the blade open..,
luckily not in someone's tire at some point lol.

That is fascinating about the pre-1982 penny. I’m curious about the significance of this particular year? Sorry to derail; just piqued my curiosity. :o

Knives like that end up having 1000 lives. As long as the pivot isn't rusted solid, it just needs some cleaning up. Show us some photos after you work on it a bit. Even if there is rust in the pivot, I'll bet some CLP or Kano Kroil or penetrating oil of your choice and some exercise will get it going again. Congratulations on the find.

After 1982 American pennies ceased being made of solid copper. Since then they are zinc with thin copper cladding because the copper content in a solid penny was too valuable, worth more than $0.01.

Thank you, Bill, that is quite interesting. I’ll have to dig through my coin stash now and see if I have any.

Cool find. I’d wash it in a basin of warm, soapy water then flush it with oil after it’s dry.

Then a progression of wet and dry sandpaper to clean the rust off (say 800,1200,1500,2000 grit) and resharpen and you’re good to go.
