Canis in black DLC --any interest?

#1

Post by mikey177 »

Before the Yojimbo 2 in black DLC came out, I had to put together my own in 2017 by swapping the blade on an S90V Yo2 with the scales of an S30V model.

I'm hoping it doesn't take Spyderco that long to give the Canis the all-black treatment.

Photo was taken against the light to give an idea of how it will look.

I'd be interested.

I'd be more interested in an s90v (either DLC or not) version, though.

Yes, Spyderco's S90V is pretty awesome. But please make it a regular production run, so that folks have a reasonable chance of getting one.

It feels (to me at least) that the canis is more of an experiment in compound grinds than it is a long staying production knife. I'd expect more interesting grinds (and hopefully more wharnys) from spyderco but I don't know if this model in particular is going anywhere. Your s90v blacked out jojimbo swap sounds like a good idea to me, I'd go for that.
Lightly insane.

Current spydie collection: Watu, Rhino, UKPK Salt G10 bladeswap, Yojimbo 2 Smooth G10 Cru-Wear, Manix lw “mystic” 20cv, SmallFly 2, Waterway, Ladybug k390, Caribbean

I thought something like that (that it was more of an experiment) too. But I've been carrying it for several days and I really think it's got _a lot_ of general utility value. I hope it sticks around (and gets exclusives and sprints). If it gets discontinued I'll be very disappointed.

What sprints/exclusives have come from Taichung? All I can think of is the PPT.

I don't know if the all-black Southard and the Domino variants with red and blue CF are sprints or exclusives, but these are also from Taichung.

Also, I would much rather it be a regular production model like the DLC Yojimbo 2, not one of those gone in the blink of an eye sprints.

I believe there was a Bento Box Shop Domino exclusive in M390 as well.

The BBS Domino was actually in CTS-204P, but yes, it was a dealer exclusive.

I would love a canis in DLC as its the first new blade from Spyderco that I've really been interested in since the Shaman came out. Unfortunately, I really cant justify $200 for the regular version, let alone any more for a DLC version :(

If they released a serrated canis in DLC, I may reconsider. Sadly there would be far too few people interested in that to make it happen.

I tried for years to get a blacked out Yojimbo 2 and by the time it happened I lost interest in DLC. Who knows though, they did a blacked out Southard which really surprised me.

Probably a no for me. Every time I relent and buy a DLC blade, I find I just don’t enjoy looking at it as much as a stonewashed/satin blade. Even losing the slick feel wiping the blade down is less enjoyable. Little details.

The blue/black & red/black weave Dominos were distributor exclusives. The Blue G10 (already mentioned) was a dealer (BBS) exclusive. The only other dealer exclusives that come to mind are the recent Smock (already mentioned) and the KC orange G10/S35VN Positron.

The all-black Southard was a regular catalog item.

Thanks for the information. Would you know if the all-black Southard came out at the same time as the satin blade Southard with brown G10?

The brown/satin came out first followed by the all-black one a couple years later

Thank you for the link. Now I'm more curious to know what is involved in making a decision to produce an all-black variant of a particular model.

I have the black G10 Southard, and I like it a lot, but some of the reviews that I went through gave me the impression that it wasn't a popular knife.

Just mentioned it in a different thread, I think the Canis just screams for a DLC coating... if it happens, I'm gonna get me one.

It's one of those SD designs that I'm surprised did not initially drop with DLC.

Not a pshop expert by any means, but I blacked out the Satin model for you to give you a better idea.

If the Canis fits in the hand as good as the Spyderco Embassy I'm in. I've always wanted a non-automatic Embassy (I have two Embassy's currently but no blacked out version yet).
