Glow in the dark?

#1

Post by sillohdrol »

Hello all! I got the limited edition glow in the dark Delica. Really sweet blade like every Spidey I've ever owned. Thing is no matter how much I “charge” it it only stays glowy for about 10mins or less. Any advice or is anyone else having this issue too?

After playing around with my Glow Delica for a bit, I was getting the same results. It would glow bright for a minute or two before rapidly fading to a dim glow, never really lasting for an extended period. I think thats just how it is with the GITD FRN.

The type and overall density of glow in the dark material that is used in a FRN for a knife handle is not the same as what you'd find in a high end watch or glow in the dark gun sights. There are a few different materials used for "GID" and the ones that glow the longest are either highly toxic, expensive or both (as is usually the case with "the good stuff").

Leaving in the sun for a few hours makes them last a few hours. Not super bright but enough to clearly see.
Had mine in the boat the other day and was still glowing a couple of hours after the sun went down.
Im a vegetarian as technically cows are made of grass and water.

What are you using to charge the GITD material?

Coming from a lume junkie, UV light is the quickest way to get a good charge. As with all lume, it is much more visible when your eyes are dark adapted, as in, you are in a dark room for a while, like your bedroom.

By the way, as Xplorer said, it isn't going to glow like a top end lumed watch, e.g. Seiko. It will dim rather quickly, and be faint, but if your eyes are adjusted you will see it.

Here is what mine does: It glows very bright for a short while, but it will visibly glow all night long, and often longer.

You have to watch the movie “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” as there is a great knife scene. Funny as movie and well recommended. New Zealand scenery is superb.

I've only had experience with Kirinite GITD and this Raffir uranium:

It only lasts for 10 minutes or so...Kirinite about the same. I'm going to have to try Spyderco's.

This video provides a great explanation of the difference between phosphorescence/photoluminescence (glow-in-the-dark plastics), chemoluminescence (light sticks), and radioluminescence (tritium gun sights, some watch dials) and why plastics only glow for so long.

I feel like the slow sales of the Zome GITD Enduras and Delicas are going to discourage other dealers from doing GITD, which is very unfortunate as they are not really correlated in my opinion. The problem is that the steel is the same VG-10 as the base model, paired with Zome, which most people don't seems to like, all at a higher price. I own the plain GITD Delica, and I would have bought a VG-10 GITD Endura, and TiCN coated VG-10 Endura and Delica had the scales just been plain non-Zome GITD.

I still think there is plenty of interest in GITD scales, but they need to be non-Zome, perhaps in some other colors like blue GITD, orange GITD, or pink GITD, and give them an interesting non-base steel to help drive the demand and justify a higher price. My preference is for Cruwear or running the Seki salts with GITD scales and FFG LC200N blades. I'd buy pretty much any Seki knife in these combos.
