Don't do this with your Maxamet

#1

Post by The Meat man »

Yesterday afternoon I was carving on a wood block that was mounted on a steel arm. I had my Manix 2 Maxamet and was really digging in the wood and carving off huge shavings. Suddenly the knife slipped unexpectedly and slammed with tremendous force right into the corner of the machined steel block on which the wood was mounted. Not good!

The damage is nasty but I have to admit I was impressed with how far the knife carved into the steel.

Note to self: be more careful next time. :o

Cool! Now you have a legitimate excuse to sharpen the knife. Lucky!

Hate it when that happens.

Wow, cool pic, glad your Manix survived, I generally use my SuperBlue Stretch1 for my casual whittling and thinking of what that would do to SuperBlue sends chills down my spine. ;)

Yeah I'm not even going to try getting all the chips out in one sharpening session. It'd take too long and waste too much expensive steel.

I don't know of any steel that would not be damaged by an impact like that.

At least you weren't scoring drywall.

Yeah, the thought of trying to repair something like that is what keeps me from trying out Maxamet. The effort-to-fun ratio of the sharpening equation is way too high for me.

Well this is a rather extreme case of edge damage. In ordinary use I've found Maxamet to be actually really strong and resistant to damage, even when cutting copper wire and plastic tubing.
And honestly with the right tools it's not at all difficult to sharpen. At least, that's been my experience.

You really should give it a try sometime. Don't let this thread scare you off. ;)

I've hit steel like this with both of my Rex 45 knives, unfortunately. Luckily, my Maxamet hasn't suffered the same fate.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

5160 would roll generally, and be easier to repair.

Good thing this didn't win your month long carry thread! Might have had to delay the launch of that. You're a really good sharpener though, I have no doubts you'll be able to get this fixed up. I'm interested in how much tougher to do so it will be compared to other steels you've worked with. Please report back!
