Favorite Spyder: Either In Larger Or Smaller Scale/Size?

#1

Post by JD Spydo »

It's been about a year since I ran a thread similar to this one. But with all the new great Spyderco models and with many new members I figure it's high time to see what people are currently thinking.

There are so many great Spyderco models ( folder & fixed blade) that I've heard so many people say > "I Would Love That Model If It Were A Smaller Or Larger Scale.

Take one of my all time favorites>> The DODO model for instance >> I've said for a long time how awesome it would be to see a larger scale version of the Dodo model.

On the other hand there are models that I would like to see somewhat smaller in size and scale>> The Chinook model would be cool with about 3 inch to 3.25 inch blade in SE.

Now I'm sure that many of you have a Spyderco model you would like to see in either a larger or smaller size & scale. Also specify edge type as well.

I'm not sure i'd ever be able to take a 3.625" to 3.75" spydiechef out of my pocket.

Something between the chef and the hundred pacer, basically.

Some of my favorites, are my favorites because of their current size. The Lil Native achieved everything I wanted it to coming from the Native 5. It's a perfect knife! ;)

I might like the Chaparral with a 2.5" blade instead of 2.8" but even thats just me trying to come up with something that doesnt seem too redundant.

1.) Chaparral XL! About PM2 length dimensions, but keeping the exact thinness of blade and handle

2.) Manix 2 LW XL... So basically a Manix 2 XL LW... ;)

3.) I am sure I will want to see the upcoming Rock Jumper also in a larger size (Caribbean-ish)
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

I'd be interested to see a Manix XL lightweight too.

I could see a smaller Szabo folder turning out nice. Something closer to Endura size.

A larger Smock and Ikuchi. Both with steel upgrades.

A slightly smaller K2 would be great, too.

All the inhouse designs are perfect, or there are other models that are similar, just a tad bigger or smaller.

Whoops, I totally misread the original post. The mock ups that Evil D posted of the larger Dragonfly has my interest.

Dragonfly in a larger size

Caribbean in a larger size, or at least as much blade as can be squeezed into the handle

Spydiechef with at least 4 inches of edge, if I can't slice a large tomato then it's useless for food prep

Basically I want everything bigger lol

I just want the PM2 with 3mm blade stock. I used to be one of the guys pleading for a downsized PM2, and they downsized everything but the blade thickness. Grrrr.

There are so many ranges in size of almost the exact knife already in the Spyderco lineup that I want to take a vote for a small Persian. I think that both the large and small versions of this knife are two of the best knives that have left the Spyderco catalog.

Dragonfly in a larger size
This! I would kill for a 3" Dragonfly.

I would love to see a Mule Team with either a slightly larger handle, or a choil, and more like a 4-4.5" blade. I'd be ok with thicker blade stock on this one.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

Personally I prefer backlock over comp.lock, but I´d like to see the Native family the "both main locks in each model- line". So Lil Native, Native 5, Shaman and Chief would each come both in comp. lock and back lock.
Even started a poll on this once: https://forum.spyderco.com/viewtopic.php?t=84760

Now, that being said: As far as I recall, at least the Shaman could not have a backlock while remaining in the exact same overall shape: The tall blade would not fit in the handle together with a backlock.

A somewhat smaller Szabo folder does indeed sound interesting. I'm going to make a note of that one for sure.

From a tactical standpoint I've also wondered how a bigger Spyderco Zowada folder might work out? That model seems to have fallen off the radar screen but I bet a larger version of it would get some attention.
