Help me pick my next Spyderco

#1

Post by vivi »

Got a little bonus and decided to buy a new knife. Here's what I have on my list:

- Siren. (Looks like I'll already be working out a deal for one)

- Autonomy 1 or 2 (Both look nice,never tried a Spydie auto)

- Swick (Heard these were in stock but can't seem to find one. May get both SE and PE)

- Serrated Police (Been looking for a FFG SE Spyderco and came across a SE Police 3 for a fair price. Very tempted...)

- Chinook 4. (Always liked the lines of the Chinook series and have yet to try the powerlock)

- Manix XL scales (Tempted to deck out my DlC M4 Manix in green micarta)

- E4. (I've been thinking about an Endura 4 now that I like the handle design, but haven't settled on which one. Maybe SE wharnie?)

What do you think? Open to knives not on this list too!

Get an Endura. I've been carrying my Enduras and Pac Salt 2 pretty much exclusively for the past few months. I'd go for the Teal S30V if I was you. Should be pretty rust proof, and if you change your mind about it you could probably get retail or more down the road for it once they are all sold out.

Hey Vivi! Welcome back!

I don't own any of the knives on your list so I won't make a recommendation, however regarding the Swick, the latest models 5 (large hole) and 6 (small hole) were announced in the latest reveal but haven't shipped yet.

Endura for sure. Especially if it's a Wharnie SE!

Siren or Endura wharnie SE...
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

I would go with the Chinook 4.

But, I'm weird.

Absololutely get the serrated police 3.

Any of the other ones you could pick up later.

Good choices. Knowing how much Vivi likes his serrated Pac Salts, it would be interesting to get his viewpoint in comparison to the FFG serrated Endura Wharnie as opposed to serrated hollow or sabre......different steels aside.

Get an Autonomy 2. It's an amazing knife.

Have you tried TeroTuf? Having gone to TeroTuf I don't think I'll ever go back to Micarta. At least not for a rough texture. Maybe for smooth.

My other suggestion would be Autonomy 1 (SE, obviously), because I think it's vastly underrated.

Hard decision! All of those knives are models I would be interested in. It's no secret how much I like the SE wharncliffe Endura, so that aside, I'd be really interested in hearing your opinions on the Swick and the Autonomy.

This is what I'm leaning towards. I'd really like a nice FFGSE folder but I'd prefer a bit of belly compared to the wharnie Endura. Plus these are rare these days. Might order it tonight in fact.

Or I could do the responsible thing and get the Police and a SE Endura wharncliffe  :D

Get the Siren, that one fits your tastes the best.

Sounds like the Siren is a sure bet (and a great knife). I say go with the XL scales, I never liked "jade" :)

However, the new TiCN Endura has been in my pocket since I got it. The reduced thumb ramp and lower spine on the E4 feel better for me in hand than the Pac Salt2. Though the liners move the balance point further back by a noticeable amount. Not a huge fan of long blade wharnies, but I'm sure I'll pick one up eventually to try out.

You mentioned the E4 SE Wharnie, and I can only speak from the experience of my PE Wharnie (E4). That SE may be a perfect choice for you!
