Not a pm3, if I am going with that size of knife I much prefer a Native 5, just my 2 cents.
How much market space would there be for a Rex 121 native, with the Maxamet native already available?

I agree with your preference for the Native over the Para3, for what it's worth.

The Rex steels are my favorite for a number of reasons, so a Rex121 knife would be at the top of my list as sort of a "Grail Knife."
Considering what was in Sal’s pocket recently (Rex121 sage ltwt), I’m a happy camper! :D
This was one of the first posts I made here, so to know the steel’s even being tested is exciting. If this knife is made, I promise I will use it to help prepare a Tyrannosaurus rex fossil.

I'd definitely be into a Rex 121 Mule.

If it was a Manix, I'd get one just to keep my collection up to date.

But honestly, I own both Rex 121 and Maxamet blades, and I prefer Maxamet (easier sharpening, same edge retention in my uses), so Rex 121 in the Spyderco line up will get a 'meh' from me, although I suspect it's a slam dunk instant sell out for a sprint or exclusive.

>>> But: Please not yet another Para 3...In my humble opinion: If it has to be a small comp. lock knife, maybe the Sage 5 (LW) should get some variants now too…

Agreed.

>>> I think it makes a lot more sense to pair a low toughness/high edge retention steel with a lighter use knife featuring thin blade stock…

Agreed.

>>> I have come to value toughness far more than edge retention. Roll>Chip, anyday.

Agreed.

Hey Tom.

What knife do you have in REX-121?

sal
The Creely Mako.

It's actually very similar to the Enuff. I kind of see it as a highly polished, slightly refined Enuff with upgraded steel. It's a really nice knife, and I like it a lot, and I have carried it quite a bit in my quest to form an opinion about Rex 121, but my go-to is still the Maxamet Manix. I tend to carry folders in the summer and fixed blades in the winter, but even then I'll admit that right now I'm pairing my Manix with a Bradford Guardian 3 (in v4e) rather than carrying the Mako. Because it's totally normal to be carrying three knives...

Can we have a PM2 and please don't make it dealer exclusive.

Yeah the Para2 would be more of what I would have in mind myself. But I also wouldn't object to it's big brother the C-36 Military model in any newer/better blade steel as well.

The Para3 is just a tad too short for most of the cutting chores I'm faced with most of the time. The Para2 is about as short as I'm willing to go with.

I’m really liking the prospect of a rex121 Sage lightweight given the model’s reputation for thin grinds and slightly more grip than the para3. The light weight is a bonus of course.

It would be very interesting to compare it to the Maxamet Sage!

I’ll buy a rex121 Spyderco whatever the design, but I’d admittedly prefer it not be a Para 2 or 3 just because I want other knives to have a chance at a steel variation or two.
Perhaps a selfish reason is that I don’t want to see all of the unique steels confined to a single design beacause I’ll only buy so many of one knife before I have to choose what to skip out on.
For example, I don’t want to lack a steel I really like for my uses as I would potentially already have x amount too many pm2s. My urge to collect doesn’t go that far.
Side note, I like the idea for the s45vn pm2 where the g10 texture was also changed.

Putting REX121 in a para 3/pm2 is a nice guarantee that 90% of them will remain new in box, just passed around between collectors, like all the purple cruwear dlt models (I'd love to grab a pre-owned user, but they're all on eBay, NIB for $220+)

Rex121:
para 3 Lightweight
Sage 5 lightweight compression lock
PM2
Military

Please not a dealers exclusive.

Would be cool to get the same treatment as Rex45 - multiple models...

I think any model in Rex 121 would be awesome to try out, a Shaman or Manix2 would be my vote, but if it came in a variant of a Sage, PM2 or Para3 I'd be in for sure... I think no matter what model it is, I'm in for one. ;)

Oh, definitely agree.

As much as I'd love this steel on a Para 3 (since this size is the perfect EDC for my smallish hands), the mere thought of another dealer snagging this as their exclusive wants to make me puke. Look at all the good steels like 10v, 4v, etc. being wasted on those Military, PM2 and Para 3 collectors and being passed along their circle and those people they influenced at inflated prices, leaving none for us enthusiasts who actually will be using these steels hard for what they're worth. So probably not the Military family if this ever goes live, and hopefully like Maxamet and 110, a regular production run.

I like it, but I like Maxamet a lot and they seem very similar to me.

Sharpening seems more difficult than Maxamet, and took me a while to get the hang of. If I owned a REX 121 Spydie I would probably just send it back to Golden for sharpening. But since it stays sharp more or less forever, that's no big deal. Edge holding seemed about the same as Maxamet (but I'm comparing apples to oranges--the platforms are very different).

I can't comment on toughness or edge stability. I try really hard not to 'baby' the blade, but it's expensive enough that I can't bring myself to get really abusive. I've never chipped my Maxamet Manix blade though (and I have chipped my s110v Manix), and I don't take any special care with my EDC knives. Does REX 121 have similar toughness to Maxamet?

I honestly think that for me a REX 121 Spyderco would be. a direct substitute for Maxamet, not an 'addition to'. If you discontinued Maxamet, for example, and switched the Maxamet stuff over to REX 121, I don't know that I'd really notice the difference.

Is REX 121 easier or harder to produce knives with? Is the material the same price? Does it take more or less labor? Is the waste/error rate about the same? Honestly, if I were you I'd be making the decision on that basis. And the inevitable 'new and shiny' marketing phenomenon for knife people.

An old video by Cedric and Ada, (probably posted here before, apologies if so) but holy cow, this is a beast of a steel.

 Well, we all know it will go on the Paras only, with tons of dealer exclusives.

I vote a small fixed blade and at least one NON-Para model, please. I think price will likely keep me away, at least initially. Must be a bear to grind and finish this steel.
