Nice to meet you, and can we have this as a Spyderco knife?

Post by David Mary »

Good evening new friends. Thank you for having me at the Spyderco forums. My first folding knife purchase was a Manix 2 XL. I loved that knife, and carried it often. It was my gateway knife to many other Spydercos, and eventually I started modding my knives, and this led down the path to becoming a knife maker myself. To date I have only made fixed blades, but recent circumstances, including my purchase and modding of the commendable YoJumbo, have led me to begin designing my first folding knife.

After owning and modding many knives from different manufacturers, including many Spydercos, I have learned exactly what I want in a folding knife, and it happens to be a collection of features that do not all exist in the same knife.

  • Large knife, with 4+ inch blade
  • Full length cutting edge with no choils
  • Handle that allows the hand to safely come right up close to the cutting edge
  • Negative blade angle for aggressive cutting leverage with no need to cant the wrist
  • Wharncliffe (or more like sheepscliffe) blade design for precision tip work
  • Comfortable and useful in saber, Filipino, reverse grip edge in, and reverse grip edge out
  • Lightweight construction (linerless G10)
  • Strong enough for any "hard use" that a folder could be expected to take
  • 4 way tip position (actually tip down is the only one I care about, but I would want the knife to be appealing to more than just me and other Millie fans)
  • Strong ambidextrous lock (the CBBL has far too few designs, in my opinion)
  • Extremely corrosion resistant, so LC200N
  • It wouldn't hurt if it also came in orange! :o

With the encouragement of friends from another knife forum community, I have come up with the beginnings of a knife design that covers all my desired features. Given that Spyderco has a reputation for collaborating with custom knife makers, and people from other walks of life as well, and given the positive feedback I have received from others about my design, I decided to go out on a limb, and have begun a dialogue with Spyderco R&D about this design, and I also wanted to share what I have come up with here with the Spyderco community, and hope for the best.

This knife is based on a machete design of mine called simply the "Barong Seax", and given the Filipino and Norse blade cultures' influences on the design, I have tentatively named the knife the "Astrid". Here are some pictures to give an idea of what I am thinking of, and the a couple examples of the original knife the design evolved from.

PICS REMOVED per Sal's suggestion

My hope is that this will appeal to others out there who, like me, are fans of the big Spydercos, like the Resilience, the Shaman, the Military, the Caribbean, and also the CBBL. My hope is the thread will be well received and serve to indicate to Spyderco enough interest that they might consider collaborating with me to make this design a reality.

Thank you all sincerely for your time, and I wish you all peace and health,

David Mary

Hi David Mary,

Welcome to tour forum.

Regarding designs for Spyderco, best if you deal with us rather than deal publicly. Once design is in public domain, it's very difficult for us to work with it.

Welcome David Mary. Looks like a nice design! I think I'd take Sal's advice and edit the design pics out of the original post. Then contact Spyderco and see if you can work something out to actually get it into production.
Of all the things I've lost I miss my mind the most!

Welcome to the forum! :)

I do like your design!
And that it would bring another CBBL model to the market-this is such a both great and underrated lock
THOUGH: I am afraid that probably that choil-less blade and the CBBL would not fit into the handle when the knife is closed!

I normally think 3mm ffg bladestock is thick enough for any folder functionwise (and enhances cutting performance)
But in a blade that long and with the tapering that I assume will go on 3.7mm is fine.

I like it and would consider buying one in green. Ticks a lot of the boxes I look for....~4" blade, corrosion resistant steel, cbbl or backlock etc.

This was my first thought as well...

Yep, would likely need a choil to work. But, other than that...great looking design. I'd be interested.

The closest you'll get to that right now is the Caribbean sheepsfoot. You'll need to compromise somewhere.

The machete looks like it might be ok, but I would get more weight forward on the blade. I will pass on the folder design.

Looks fantastic! Offer it in both PE and SE and it'll hit alot of marks for me. Thanks for pushing for LC200N. :) Negatively angled wharncliffes get my attention.

I dig that blade shape too! Reminds me of a more robust Centofante 4.

"This" in ffg and for me with another locktype (and in SE) would be pretty nice... ;)

EDIT: And would be kind of a Rock Jumper... :D

No, you are not haha.. It was the first thing that came to my mind as well! David's proposed knife has some size/grind/lock differences, but the overall profile looks quite similar to me.

Welcome David!
