Unpopular opinions

#1

Post by Moneyman »

I’m pretty new to this forum (18 months), don’t post much (4), but visit to read almost daily. I learn a lot, but one reason I don’t post much is it seems many of my opinions aren’t held by the majority of this community. For example:
1. My dragonfly feels like a toy. Also, the short wire clip is too rigid.
2. The compression lock hasn’t changed my life.
3. I think my Sage 5 is beautiful, but I don’t carry it because it’s a bit too big and I’m afraid of damaging it. Also, see #2 above.
4. I love my cheap Cat and carry it every day. In fact, my first one was stolen by the security staff at the Ryman Theater in Nashville and I bought another.
5. I love wire clips and black blades. There, I said it.

I’m not really new to Spyderco, just the forum. My first Spyderco was a Delica with the molded plastic clip. I lost it and also its replacement with the metal hourglass clip. Something about my body chemistry repels Delicas.

Things that keep me coming back:
1. I enjoy reading the opinions of others here and have learned much.
2. I get a kick out of some of the funny and inventive user names. Some of my favorites: Sumdumguy, metaphoricalsimile, and dread pirate. Princess Bride is a fabulous movie. If you haven’t seen it, do yourself a favor.
3. I just watched the YouTube video “Spyderco Shop Tour.” Increased my respect for Sal and Eric and cemented my opinion that Spyderco makes the best knives available.

Keep up the good work, ladies and gentlemen. Blessings to all.

Thinking highly of the Glessers is hardly unpopular here. ;)

I don't like wire clip.
And I think knives under 3.5 inches are just small.

Backlock is the best thing since sliced bread.

Greetings.

I dislike wire clips, but most people here seem to love them.

I like black blades, especially if the coating is DLC.

I never disassemble my knives, other than to move pocket clips, or adjust a screw here or there when needed.

I have no interest in sprint runs.

I have no interest in Spydies with non-stainless/tool steel blades.

Many of my opinions seem to differ from a lot (most?) of posters here, too. Don’t let that stop you from sharing your opinions/observations if you want to.

I’ve just been sat fidgeting with my PM2 (people love fidgeters), and I think the back lock tab could line up better with the scales and could probably be a few mm higher towards the front than the back. Also the tip of the choil hits my finger when it drops back in. Also the font on the bottom ‘Golden’ could be a fraction smaller so it doesn’t show when the blade is closed!

I also love black blades!

Few! Getting that off my chest felt good!

Forums are a great place to share knowledge, once opinions creep in you’re on a slippery slope to **** I think

Right, I now need to go buy an all black version as I don’t have that one 😁

The only thing that would make you "unpopular" with me is if you would trash talk my C-60 Ayoob or my M390 Military. Those are both sacred to me

Let's face it our opinions are like our fingerprints>> everyone has both and they are both entirely different>> no exceptions ;)

Well, I agree regarding the Cat and the Compression lock, so you are not that out of line after all.

I bought a Cat just to have a cheap travel knife and fell in love with it.

I prefer the mid back lock over all locks and the CBBL second.

I don't like most FRN scales, and I really don't like lightweight designs and their inflation. Most of my spydies have been carried, but only a small number of them have really been used. None of them has been abused.

Nice thread!

- I absolutely DISlike deep carry clips on knives bigger than lets say a Chaparral

- I prefer a good linerlock over a comp. lock - and a backlock or CBBL over both the former anyway

- I think the Para 3 is kind of cool, but more of a niche knife designwise. For me the Sage 5 is a better and more thought through design and should have gotten all the variants the Para 3 has in the realm of small comp. lock knives

- If all my folders came in S30V only, I would not complain. For me it´s a great steel and not "outdated".

- In my experience one does not need more than 3mm bladestock strengthwise, even in ffg and even in harder use

- (Spydercos!!) SE works better than PE in most tasks (this opinion seems to get less and less "unpopular" as of lately..)

- FRN/FRCP is the best handle material Spyderco offers

- Longer blades have many advantages over shorter blades, but almost no disadvantages (functionwise! I am not talking laws, "intimidation" of non knife people and so on)

Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

I dislike the wire clip
No love here for blacked out blades
S30v is a perfectly good steel
I would choose just about any steel before S110v, yes even 8cr13mov!
Not a big fan of carbon fibre scales...
Except for the cf over g10, that stuff is great! Looks decent, plenty of grip with a nice feel
Backlocks are only o.k.

I also don't care for wire clips besides the one on the Urban and Dragonfly
I can't stand FRN/FRCP
I LOVE the cbbl
I have to force myself to carry a PM2, just because I have a couple that I don't really want to get rid of
I don't like small knives with thick blade stock
I prefer a 50/50 choil
I love me some carbon fiber, as well as DLC
I don't care for all the goofey designed handles and blades that seem more like collector pieces than users
I love sprints/exclusives, most of my collection consists of them
I don't worry about scratching them up, sprints/exclusives are usually the only way to get a particular steel
I like liner and frame locks too
15 :bug-red 's in 10 different steels

Unpopular opinions:
• It's okay to collect knives.
• Using you're knife in a certain way (or at all) does not make you a better or worse "knife owner" than someone else. (Barring anything malicious)
Using a knife has a very broad definition.
• Flippers are not a problem. The people willing to pay their insane asking prices are the real problem.

Many of the new compression lock models would be better suited with a backlock or liner lock.

All LW models should have a deep carry wire clip, especially if there is already a G10 version with the spoon.

The PM2 LW with a deep carry wire clip should be Spydercos #1 priority.

Spyderco kitchen knives are awesome :)

- People like to use the word "premium" to justify charging/paying for more than something is really worth.
- S30v is not a great choice of "base steel" for Golden models. Most people would probably be better served by the use a cheaper, lower carbide stainless steel that can easily be sharpened on Aluminum Oxide stones as the "base steel" for Golden models.
- Many knives that are considered "ergonomic masterpieces" are unnecessarily compromised by thump ramps that are too steep, scales that are too blocky, or edges that are too sharp.
- "Bidirectional texturing" on flat slabbed FRN scales doesn't have any functional value over uniformly textured, contoured FRN scales offered by other companies.
- Spydieholes are a detriment to many knife designs. The insistence on having non-functional or functionally detrimental holes is ridiculous (especially when there is a Spyderco logo right next to it).
- Having spyderco logo on the blade, scales, and clip (in addition to a spydiehole) is excessive branding. One logo on the knife blade is more than enough.
