Haha, that was a good one
And to state the obvious - awesome photograph
thanks for the compliment and for taking my comment in the spirit in which it was given.
Trying to be on my best behavior
i humbly recommend the pacific salt in h1. i honestly believe everyone should have one. if it's too long to own where you live, then try a salt 2 instead. they are great knives.
i personally enjoy the hollow grind/spyderedge combo. it makes for a great beater knife that begs to be used. in my experience, i've found h1 to be stronger. i managed to slightly roll a couple of teeth on my caribbean, but couldn't do the same with my pac salt on the same materials. both are fine, but i prefer the thicker spine, hollow grind, and toughness of se h1.
David I'm about 98.9% sure I remember Sal saying that we would get the C-60 Sprint Run in PE & SE both. Unless I'm in need of Alzheimer's medication I'm almost totally certain that he assured us of that about 6 months ago. And I tend to remember stuff that important.Evil D wrote: ↑Sat Jan 22, 2022 1:13 pmconfucius wrote: ↑Sat Jan 22, 2022 12:53 pmWith the caveat that everyone's needs/preferences are different, I would respectfully disagree that it's a 'huge' improvement. I live in the SE and greatly value edge retention and corrosion resistance. In the edge retention category, Cruwear is only an itty bitty bit better - Cruwear rates a 5, VG-10 a 4.5, out of 10. For corrosion resistance, Cruwear is 5.5, VG-10 a 7.5, out of 10. But I must acknowledge that Cru is twice as tough as VG-10 (8 vs 4, respectively, out of 10).JD Spydo wrote: ↑Sat Jan 22, 2022 11:24 amCruwear will still undoubtedly be a huge improvement over VG-10>> which up till now has been the only blade steel you could get the C-60 Ayoob in PE or SE either one. I'm kind of surprised that they didn't use SPY-27 because that was sort of what I was expecting.
Cruwear is the definitely the new hotness and an overall good performer. But I'm wary of the low corrosion resistance in my humid corner of the country. I would have preferred a stainless steel, but I'm thrilled with the possibility of picking up a new SE version to pair with my PE VG-10 model.
Limited data avail on SPY27, but here's what Knife Steel Nerds says about it: "[CPM SPY27] looks somewhat similar to S35VN but with increased Nb and N, decreased C and V, and a 1.5% cobalt addition. The resulting steel is expected to have similar hardness and corrosion resistance to S30V and S35VN. The edge retention is likely a small step down from S35VN. The toughness is probably a bit better than S35VN. And sharpening is probably a bit easier to S35VN."
Let's keep in mind we still have zero confirmation that there will be any SE Cruwear coming....this may just be a plain edge sprint run and that's that.
But, I think toughness is also important with SE. What I'm most curious about is toughness but also the hardness of Cruwear vs something like H1 that is also regarded as being tough but also fairly soft.

And you might be right about the Cruwear being only for the plain edged unit. Personally I would be A-OK if they used VG-10 for the SE version. It's one of my top 5 favorite blade steels for serrated blades. But we will soon see.
No. If you have the choice, go with LC200N - better hardness and toughness with identical corrosion resistance. LC200N has a max hardness of about 60 Rc with edge retention and wear resistance similar to other low carbide steels like AEB-L and 14C28N (better than H1's 57 Rc). LC200N has excellent corrosion resistance and excellent toughness. H1 has excellent corrosion resistance and good toughness.
Seriously though guys when you think about it>> the properties necessary for a blade steel to show premium performance in plain edge are totally different that what's needed for a folder with TEETH. Also it's been my experience that the properties of the blade steel that will make an ideal serrated edge are a different set of properties all together. ZDP-189 for instance proved to us that many of your premium blade steels which make super wicked plain edges don't always fare well in a serrated blade. Spyderco very quickly quit making serrated blades in ZDP-189 because it proved to be far too brittle for the rigors of a serrated edge.
Me too. Really, I like everything they did on the new version. Going with CruWear definitely kicked it up a notch too. I got to see my brother's original C-60 Ayoob at Christmas, which makes me even more excited to see this new version come to fruition.JD Spydo wrote: ↑Sun Jan 23, 2022 3:06 pmSeriously though guys when you think about it>> the properties necessary for a blade steel to show premium performance in plain edge are totally different that what's needed for a folder with TEETH. VG-10 is one of the very few blade steels I've found to do well in both SE & PE. It's certainly not a supersteel in PE but it's far from being trash as well. And I've had great results with VG-10 serrated blades over the years.
VG-10 and XHP both have proven to me that both steels excel in both edge types. But those two steels are exceptional in that regard. But I am drooling over the thought of a C-60 Ayoob model in plain edge with a Cruwear blade. Yeah that would immediately become my newest EDC folder!!
To recommend a first serrated Spyderco blade to someone my first pick would be the Jumpmaster>> although I will admit your pick of a Pacific Salt is a good one as well. As far as a folder goes it's hard to beat one of the RESCUE models in full SE.ladybug93 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 22, 2022 2:50 pmi humbly recommend the pacific salt in h1. i honestly believe everyone should have one. if it's too long to own where you live, then try a salt 2 instead. they are great knives.
