Reshaping the Lil’ Lum

#1

Post by MichaelScott »

Like many of us here I am a dedicated aficionado of Bob loves designs and master cutlery skills. I wish I had known about him before he passed.

So, it turns out that I am at heart a poor collector of Bob’s Chinese folder designs. Consequently, I have to restrict myself to the Spyderco and Bob Lom collaborations. Which is just fine with me. I have found a large Chinese folder and all the evidence indicates that is authentic from Spyderco. That one is on his way to me. And another knife in my collection will be on his way to someone else as a result. One in,
One out.

I also found a new very reasonably priced Lil’ Lum from a dealer that I have dealt with many times before so I have no doubt about its newness or authenticity. My intent with the Lil’ Lum, especially since it has a VG 10 blade steel is to, with the right hand tools (not power tools) reshape belly to much more closely match Bob‘s original designs.

Having never done anything like this before, all constructive advice is welcome.

Thanks.

I usually just use a cheapo extra coarse diamond benchstone any time i need to flatten the belly on a knife.

I just removed the slight curve from one of the new M4 bailouts from benchmade, and it worked great.

Im not familiar with the Lum original design that you're referring to, so i dont know exactly how much belly you're looking to remove, but as long as you're not looking to go full on wharncliffe, id say that may work for you.

Good luck!

Unless you’re going to regrind the flats messing with the belly will just screw up the thickness behind the edge.

Yes, true. I’m probably going just leave it alone.
