A more sensible soltion might increase the possibility of actually doing the project.

Sal; I am thinking about creating a poll to give everyone their say in choosing a handle type for the Damasteel UKPK. Can you please give me an idea of as many options as possible that would fit in the realms of reasonable probability for this knife?
  • G10 (colour to be decided)
  • Plain carbon fibre.
  • Peel ply CF
  • Micarta
  • Unicorn horn

Sorry.
I responded to this thinkinf "spy27" was a colour, when I googled it.

I am liking both of those options for handle colour too, but we are not discusing the steel now, just the handle colour.

Would either be good in G10, or not really?

I'd honestly take this in regular issue black G10, it's a lot easier to make fancy scales later than it is to get some damasteel on a Spyderco.

To borrow an analogy, I'd rather focus on the engine rather than the paint job....

I think this really is the crux of it. It doesn't have to be a mega money job to interest me, I just want the damasteel.

The equipment to make a fancy handle is becoming cheaper and cheaper, there are now more and more people that can make you almost anything you want.

Lets get a sensible decision smashed out, so we can see of Sal will run with it.

^Would absolutely buy either of these.

On the Damasteel I'm a maybe due to price concerns. Would vote for standard peel-ply g10, (black or potentially another color,) assuming other non-frn scale materials would cost more.

SPY27 is the Spyderco own steel. I would be shocked if Sal and the gang wouldn't introduce it to all inhouse designs, in time. Just be patient.

This thread is for a UKPK sprint in a rare steel. Let's stick with Damasteel.

It sounds like you guys have not tried to get a full custom handle done in a while. I have several knives I've been trying to get handles made for, for a couple of years now...

No dice! Either they don't make scales for the model in question, or they don't make scales anymore. Heck, I've tried finding a custom knife maker to do it, with no luck.

I've even resorted to guilting forumites, to no avail. ;) :p

I would pay the extra to have it be finished when it leaves the factory. Otherwise, it would just be another project on the pile and I don't need that.

Given the internet grief about pocket clips that are deemed sub-par, I can just imagine the whinging if Damasteel were paired with frn or plain peel-ply.

I'm a little confused about the names for different carbon fibre patterns. For some reason I'd thought the type of CF on the Kapara and Radioactive Spyder's Caly was called 'shredded', but it looks quite different to that other shredded CF shown earlier in the thread.

In any case the Kapara style CF would be my choice. Coloured G10 with an accent layer would be fine too, but I could see that some people wouldn't dig 'plain ol G10'.

I think Spyderco prefer to keep those colours like blurple and British Racing Green associated with particular steels, but I could be wrong.

In any case, it wouldn't be too hard to do a slightly different shade. Even black G10 with a red accent layer would look pretty cool with the Damasteel blade.

I don't know why, but I keep Imagining this knife as a drop point blade version!

Drop point Damasteel with contoured plain carbon fiber would be amazing!

Thank you for pointing this out to me. Your 2 pence is worth more to me than you realise.

When "spy27" was suggested to me, I just google-imaged it and found a lot of images of a knife with a dark blue handle, so I though that is what was meant.

I was clearly wrong, and apologise for any confusion.

The blade is damasteel, and I was only discussing the handle.

I am not a fan of listening to whinging, but I am very interested in productive input.

So what is your suggestion?

With a Leaf shape blade we would enjoy a tiny little bit more of the Damasteel pattern, or am I wrong? I do like the drop point shape alot, but for a Damasteel blade, I'd go for the maximum blade surface...

Yes.

100% leaf shape for me. That damasteel exposure has to be maximised.

I prefer the drop point blade but wouldn't say no to a leaf in Damasteel.

Here's a poll I created awhile back about the drop point vs. leaf UKPK:

Also prefer leaf on a potential damasteel sprint.

Way to much voices for leaf blade here ... ;) ... therefore I'm forced to write these important words: I would prefer droppoint blade. :D

I'll buy a DP Damasteel spydie. Or a leaf shape. Let's just do it. ;)
