I just purchased a S30V Para 3 in G10 to do a side by side comparison with. It should allow us to see what Spy27 offers with more context.

I'll be interested to read your comparison. When I touched up my SPY27 P3LW the other night I also did my BD1N P3LW and my G10 S30V & REX45. There were all in need of a touch up so I figured I'd take care of them all while I was at it. It was kind of interesting to do them all at the same time and comparing how the edge feels, how they cut hard wood, etc. Probably should've grabbed my M390 LW, M390 G10, and 4V P3 too.
Of all the things I've lost I miss my mind the most!

Thanks for doing this.
I appreciate eliminating all the variables possible... knife/geometry/sharpening, current version, etc.

Thank you, I picked up an S45vn Pm2 as well at the local gun store while picking up some more ammo. I figured it would be fun for the community to see how that stacks to s30v as well.

For the first time ever, my SPY27 factory edge was just too good to sharpen. I also have been on a bit of a binge lately, and have a number of new knives that REQUIRE sharpening. So im carrying my Para 3 LW everyday until i wear down the edge somewhat. Very excited to take it for a whirl soon.

Thanks for the info and testing. I'm super excited about SPY27 but I think I may hold out for a native lw. We'll see how much willpower I can muster :)

I have some knives for us to compare the CPM SPY 27 to.

Here are the hardness values of some knives I'll be testing the Spy27 Para3 against.

VG-10 59.0rc
S30V 60.1rc
S45VN 61.5rc

Spy27 62.0rc.

I'll share the test results and a video when done.

Interesting! That initial report has me interested! I am a big fan of steels that have a more aggressive edge characteristic at any given grit. That’s actually why Cruwear is one of my favorites to sharpen. It’s not just that it “wants to get sharp” as you say, but it maintains its aggression even into higher grit finishes.

I’ll probably pick up one of the lightweights in this steel soon.
Have you messed around with Elmax?

That was my impression of it. I feel like it feels sharper at a higher angle.

100% I saw Submicron’s review on blade forms I am hoping Shawn can confirm or deny these test. Based on sub microns review on waveform this might be the most undervalued and under rated steel to come out in a long time
