Kapara Vanax or LC200N

#1

Post by Trinity300 »

Hi all! I finally joined the Spyderco family after buying my PM2 which arrived today (pic below). I love the compression lock system. I was looking at getting the Kapara as my next one and was wondering why it is not offered in LC200N. It seems like it would be a no brainier for a "food prep" knife. It looks like they got it right in the SpydieChef, but I want the Compression Lock of the Kapara. Plus I like the look of the Kapara more.

Vanax, Elmax, or M390/20CV/204P would be a well rounded upgrade too, and they shouldn't be any more prone to corrosion than CPM-S30V (unlike M4/K390/Rex45). It seems like the last run was released around August last year? Hopefully, a new batch will be released soon.

I agree on the LC200N. Sal has said they're watching to see how the Kapara sells before they consider a sprint run. Considering it's been out of stock through SFO for as long as I can remember, it must be selling quite well.

I'd love a Kapara in LC200N. Heck I'd just love a Kapara - can't get them anywhere...

I've seen some on Amazon and Ebay, but the price is inflated. Who knows if they are even authentic?

The kapara is really a beautiful knife, and really seems made for lc200n (or the almost-as-highly-stainless m390 family). And how about some color on those scales? Lc200n and that nice forest green would be very attractive.

I have figured out how I would like to see it happen.

LC200N, marbled contoured CF(so there's a difference) and a yellow backspacer.

That sounds nice to me.

I’d only be interested in a LC variant if it was a full salt. I love the current version just the way it is.

I agree with your observations. I check the Online Spyderco Store a couple times per week for the Kapara and it is never in stock. Been that way for over a year... maybe closer to two years.

OpFocus is a great program but it's disappointing when the knife I want the most hasn't been in stock in so long. I'd rather buy from SFO but I may wind up shelling out the extra $50 or so and order from somewhere else just so I can get it.

Would love to see an LC200N/G10 back lock version. I enjoy the compression lock but something about this knife feels 'back lock' to me. G10 for utility and to reduce cost. Great knife all around though.

Vanax would be a great option too. Might be a little pricier, but I'd pay about $40 more for it.

I'm 50% more interested in any knife that comes in LC, and 100% more interested if it's SE/LC.

A little? If theoretically that ever happens it would be more than $140 higher, perhaps around $350...
I do hope for LC200N version too, but guess that SPY27 will come sooner.

Unless it is way harder to tool, I don't see why it would cost that much. I'm guessing S30V costs around $10 per blade. It would cost around $12 for LC200N, $18 for M390, or $28 for Vanax. I'm sure they would get a good discount though for buying in bulk.

Do we know for sure that those numbers represent Spyderco's landed costs per unit and are you sure it costs less to order in bulk at Spyderco's scale?

Spyderco often times is the only reason some of these different steels come to market in the first place.

I'm pretty sure I've heard Sal say that Vanax is even more expensive than Maxamet.

That said I really hope that someday we can get Vanax (or something even better) in a Spyderco knife.
