New Salt 2, is this a problem? (Lock bar related)

#1

Post by AwayFromMySpydieHole »

I’ve had plenty of spyderco lock backs. Never quite ran into this before, though. Just opened the package and when the knife is locked open the lock bar is very proud up front, and is inset into the handle in the back.

Anyone else had this or seen this, and is it an issue? The knife seems to lock up solid as it is, but I don’t want to to be a problem that takes a while to present itself or something like that. Thanks all.

I've had this a little bit with my Tasman Salt but not quite that bad. I guess you could maybe get it exchanged?

I don't like it because it feels like a shallow lockup.

Well I’ve cycled it a couple hundred times now and I think it’s a bit better. The lock seems to sink deeper now. Not perfect, but deeper.

That leads me to believe it will only get better with time - not worse.

I’m thinking it’s probably tolerance stacking. Coated lock bar and coated blade. As the coating wears down I think it’ll sink deeper and deeper. I hope at least. Can’t return it for an exchange now because I’ve fiddled with it a bunch.

I’ll report back, because it’s about to be used a lot.

My guess would be the same as yours, and I doubt it will be a problem. Enjoy your new Salt!

My P4 LW is slightly like that. Definitely not that severe. No biggie for me... seems to function like all my other lock backs from spyderco

Is there anything like pocket lint or debris stuck in the blade tang that is preventing the lock bar from seating all the way? That definitely doesn't look right.

I might be concerned that the lock bar isn't engaging the tang deep enough, but on the other hand it'll have a lot of room for wear and should settle into the tang deeper over time.

Have the same on my P4lw, has not affected functionality in any way, lockup is as solid as on any of my other lockbacks
