Why did this never happen? Was it ever a possibility?

The original Manix is kind of Manix XL backlock with thicker blade stock...
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

The original Manix is exactly that. I’m carrying my back lock manix 2 today and absolutely love it! I wish I had an XL back lock to go with it.

I would guess that because if you need that kind of toughness in a knife that size you should probably use a fixed blade.

If Spyderco was considering a Manix 2 XL back lock I would imagine they would've been watching the sales for the Manix 2 back lock before deciding if it was worth producing. Since the Manix 2 back lock was short-lived I would doubt they'd proceed with the M2XL back lock

I wonder how the Manix 2 backlock would have been received if it had the same thinner bladestock and the same thinner overall profile as the CBBL Manix 2... don´t know if it would have been more successful in that form, but I personally would like it more (thinner overall, especially in the blade) and slightly over the CBBL Manix.

We’ve asked for this knife for years. I wish I had one already. A Salt version would rock!

This.

Maybe the failure of the back lock had more to do with factors other than the lock type (blade thickness, handle thickness, lack of liners, price), but I doubt they'll be quick to revisit the concept on the xl. Especially since the cbbl xl doesn't seem to be a huge seller.

At this point I think the Stop Lock is the next logical progression for the Manix XL.
That or we need a Parata XL.
